I bought a can motor to convert my Bachmann 4-4-0, but the drive shaft was too small for the universal sockets I had for it. Querying Northwest Short Line was to no avail, because they weren't sure of the motor shaft diameter, either.
Anyway, I threw the motor in my parts drawer until I figured out what to do with it, which I did this week. I slid a length of shrink tubing on the shaft. It was a nice tight fit, and I left a little hanging past the end so I could slide a universal socket on it. I had to force the socket on the shaft and shrink tubing combination, but when I was done, it fit nice and tight and should do the job, should I ever decide to re-motor the Bachmann, which now runs fine with the cheap Tyco throttle and Dremel Speed controller combination. Here is a photo of the modified motor. You can see the shrink tubing extending past the universal socket
This may help some who are having problems with re-motoring projects

That is indeed a clever solution. Thanks for posting. I am sure I will be using this idea some day.
