At a small train show today. I picked up this Tyco engine for free when I bought an Athearn GP35. The tag read parts engine - does not run. I brought it home, cleaned off the wheels and this engine runs great. The plastic wheels on the motor are not any good. The bottom plate that holds the wheels on are riveted so I don't know how to replace them. Also looking for the two wheel sets with the gear on the axle for the motor section. Any help

I was also given this one that said parts only but got home and it does run. I don't know how this one goes together. Any help would be appreciated.

You can pop the sideframe off on the side with the plastic wheels and pull them off the axle. Swap them for the plastic wheels from a junker, even from a Powertorque dummy truck, which are very common. You'll need to glue the sideframe back on, though.

As for the Plymouth switcher, I think it's missing 2 diecast weights for the front and rear. It's built basically like their other industrial switcher.

Another, more thorough approach is described, here:

This may be overkill for what you are after, but it is an option.

In terms of the rivets, they can usually be drilled out or ground off, then replaced with bolts and nuts.

tramp-
I picked up a Santa Fe GP20 just like that this weekend at an antique mall. Was in the original box but minus the handrails. Put it on the tracks tonight, the light came on, it growled, and that was it. After cleaning the wheels and putting a small drop of oil on the motor bearing shaft it came back to life. It seems to be running better as it continues to get more track time.

Update: I gently pried off the side truck frames and changed the wheels out. Every thing is in gauge and the engine runs well so far. Now the problem. What do I use to hold the side frames in place until the CA dries?

CA usually doesn't take more than 2-3 minutes to set enough to hold whatever you are gluing in place, not fully cured but enough to hold while you set it aside for a few hours.
Is there a way you can make an inpromptou jig to stabilize it in place? A paint bottle or some piece or pieces from your junk box to set beside it?

Frank; I am using Loc-tite brand super glue. When I glue the frames on it only takes about 10 seconds and I can let go. Are you making sure that everything is clean first? When I do them I first lightly file the plastic sideframe. Then I use a wire wheel in a Dremel tool to polish off the mating portion on the metal truck.

Randy, I haven't tried anything yet. I will be doing that this weekend when I won't be rushed for time. I thought maybe cleaning everything with alcohol would do the trick. I think I do use the Loc-tite brand super glue.

Mostly likely when you put the Tyco SF Industrial Switcher back together it is not going to run.... Why... because at the end of each sie frame there is a small insulator box. These are impossible to find if they are missing. I make mine from Paper Spackle Tape. I cut out the paper to fit into the slots where the side frame goes.
