I would hazzard a guess at varney but that diamond mark on the bottom has me stumped. not familiar with gilbert or american flyer marks. could it possible be a pre war mfg.?

It's by Scale-Craft OO scale, made for about 20 years from 1937 into the '50s. Lionel's OO prewar caboose is a close copy, but the tell is the smaller cupola windows.
