My accessory of the week is a gravel loading ramp. The concept is based on one at Potosi Station WI. The quarry is a distance up a steep road from the tracks. Gravel was trucked down to a ramp atop a wall above the tracks. The ramp was lowered to allow the gravel to be dumped in a waiting hopper or gondola. I had only enough room to get the ramp high enough for a low gondola. Here it is: /tyco/forum/uploaded/scsshaggy/20131016160628_GravelDumpUp.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/scsshaggy/20131016160656_GravelDumpDown.jpg The ramp hinges up and down on a hinge made of a piece of wire and some paper-thin copper sheet. It works on the principle of a piano hinge only much smaller. I think I got the chain at Clover House. The counterweights are fishing sinkers. Pulleys are turned from plastic sprues. The wooden parts are odd bits of wood glued with carpenter's glue.
Of course, I needed a dump truck for this, and for the era of my layout and the size of the operation, something similar to a 1930 Model AA dump truck would work well. Here's a picture of one (not my photo nor my truck): http://www.mafca.com/gallery/30AAdumpJT.jpg I had a ROCO model of a Russian ZIS-5 army truck like this picture from the Walther's website: /tyco/forum/uploaded/scsshaggy/20131016161302_RocoZIS5.gif With some thin plastic and some solvent glue, the deck of the truck could be made to resemble the Ford AA dump bed. A little paint and some scale gravel (full size sand) makes for a reasonable dump truck: /tyco/forum/uploaded/scsshaggy/20131016161546_GravelDumpTruck.jpg
The hill and the stone retainer wall are carved from Styrofoam. The road up it is glued sand, and the tall weeds are manila hemp rope fiber glued and tinted a bit with diluted latex paint.

Don, NICE work! The ramp, then works? As if the truck is there "down" and gondola is present, and the ramp is up with the truck out being loaded, and or the gondola is missing?
NICE operating accessory!

Thanks for the kind words.
The ramp has to be pushed up and down by hand, but yes, it is hinged to be in either position.

Thanks. I like those old Roundhouse cars with the metal under frames. The weight and coupler height are generally just right, and the cars just look nice.
