Seaboard Family Lines "CSXT" BQ23-7...

Well I have said for some time, I had this model, and thought to myself, "I know I took pictures of it, where are they?" WELL, I got to looking and found them! (IMAGINE THAT?)

Anyway, here is the repaited model, with CSXT reporting marks AND road number!

Good front shot...

This Bachmann shell is mounted to an Athearn UboatB frame, and is a dummy, Its dummied for 2 reasons, the CSX counter part is powered, also by Athearn frame under it. See:

And then the second reason my Seaboard Family Lines BQ23-7 is a dummy is because of this:

Which is also powered, so you see I have a powered BQ23-7, a dummy BQ23-7, and then to add to it (IF I'd want to couple in tandem another SFL loco, I got a powered U33B....Nice round up, if I do say so, myself! ALL custom painted, and detailed, and powered, as needed.

These look great. Looks like Bachmann made a fairly decent shell. I've always wanted to pick up one of the "Aegis cruisers."
I would do it in Kodachrome paint of course :]

Thanks for the compliments!!!!! I wanted them not only to run good (Athearn frame and power) but look good as well.....I could have added more but its a diesel and I'm good with that! (I model steam a lot more, however the EMD GP30 is my favorite diesel, and the GE BQ23-7 seems to have taken a favorite seat in diesels as a "GE" unit.....

Well a short history lesson, to let you know, Bachmann WAS thee ONLY company to make the BQ23-7!!!!! BESIDES brass that is.....

So, that said, they haven't been made since the early 1990's.....SO, I'd say good luck!

On finding one and you do get one, There were A LOT made, the sad thing is, prototypically now, the only company to have them, was Seaboard! In real life, there was only 10 made! In 1978...All purchased from GE by Seaboard...BUT Kodachrome? You referring to Santa Fe? Sorry, I'm not aware of the scheme name, you mentioned here......Not one I have ever been 'tracted to paint.

That model looks terrific! I am a big fan of the Q boat ever since I encountered one at the Gateway Yard in E St Louis. The cab windows had been welded over with steel plate by then and it was relegated to tailing unit status, but still what a cool locomotive. I think one would look amazing in a fantasy Kodachrome scheme.

Steven,
Thanks. which model tho? LOL I did 2 of them, one in the Family Lines paint and the other in the last CSX paint, before the plating, began.....(I plan to make at least one, more with the windows plated over, in I think CSX, all gray with the blue top and blue underside, and trucks and fuel tank, (my mind isn't made up yet.....)

They were a cool locomotive, I mean really, just a B23-7 with an odd cab that weighed a lot more then you'd think... but was spacious inside for what I have read and heard......

I must admit that I am partial to the Family Line color scheme because the old L&N mainline to E. St. Louis used to run behind my grandparents house in Belleville Il. I would take off running at the first sign of an air horn. By then, Family lines units were common and took a shine to them, especially the big GE power! They both look great though.

You compelled me to dig out my one and only Q Boat and post it. Its a stock Bachman but I did put in one of those weird Bachman all wheel drive chassis that kind of resemble an Athearn drive.

Steven,
That's a nice unit even so still remaining Bachmann.....I got both the Q boats I got in Chessie livery, (and we both know, that Chessie NEVER had them!) BUT, had to custom paint as I seen fit, if you look my Family Lines version, has a CSX "Patch" on it, with a CSX road number, where yours, still carries the Family Lines road number.....

I too have a fondness for the Family Lines paint......See I grew up on B&O mainline in Pennsylvania, on "Sand Patch".....during the years of railroad name transition, I seen everything. from B&O-C&O, and WM to Seaboard, to SCL, to even L&N.....BUT of those railroads I recall the Seaboard Family Lines units more.....Specifically, the Family Lines paint....As it was the last paint before the Seaboard System paint came through......

I got this "thing" right now that I seem to recall seeing a EMD SD50 in Family Lines, BUT theres no way! The SD50's came out new in Seaboard System paint!!!!!! So, I have got to be confusing the SD50 with the SD45-2's, (both pretty big units) so.......Why? I got no idea! Its just a mental image of seeing that big SD50 I guess.......in Family Lines paint, (not that it be a bad thing but that's a HUGE loco in that paint!!!!!!)

ben, stay patient and keep your eyes open - they surface for sale every once in awhile. Bad news is that the ones in excellent shape seem to command stratospheric prices.
I found one on ebay in fair condition I am in the process of repainting/decaling/detailing now. Snagged it for $15.00 and felt lucky. It had a chip cracked off the front pilot, front handrails missing and cracked drive gears - none of which meant a thing to me since those details are fixable and I'm putting the shell on a later Bachmann Plus chassis.

I have to agree with JNXT, the BQ loco's that I got, I don't think I have $25 in the 2 of them, bought at different times...NOW? I think the last one I seen at a show was there one minute for I THINK it was $60 or $65! went around and came back through and the damn thing was GONE! And really? These units are merely a shell......the old Bachmann powered frame was next to useless......if it ran, it pull maybe 4 cars till the motor fried crispy.....And then to sink the shell over a plus frame, or as I did an Athearn UboatB frame one powered one a dummy......And NOW mine run and pull pretty good! not to mention not real lid runners eithers, specially the dummy versions
