I'm wondering if there is a difference in performance (with the General) depending upon whether you're using a tube shaft or the original style shaft? I'm wondering whether one is quieter than the other? Or more "sure" with less play? I must say, the little play that is in mine, that allows it to "idle" just a wee bit, makes it kind of interesting to watch the shaft rotate; almost as if it were some sort of tachometer. [What's this guy on?]

Barry, you referring to fuel line from RC Airplanes type shafting?
A few things to remember.....
When your building such, be sure to leave a bout 1/16th from shaft to shaft INSIDE the tubing. this will allow "play" in the movement, DO NOT make them flush fitting! DO this in both locations, worm gear shaft, to transfer shaft, then from transfer shaft to motor shaft in tender.....DO NOT try to use the fuel line shaft to carry itself WITHOUT a shaft going through it, its just not stiff enough to carry the motion and put up with the torque from the motor.
AND do yourself a favor, keep oil and grease away from the tubing it will loose its "grip" on the shafts!

| John, my query was more about "could I expect an improvement in performance" with a tubing style drive shaft. The General I have does have the factory shaft and it seems to work fine (The General actually is probably the best running engine I have, as far as being able to chug along slowly and steadily. The powered tender will hesitate at a turnout at times, but otherwise it runs good.), but it is noisy. I'm thinking I need to mount the motor with some fiber washers to maybe reduce some vibration and noise. Anyway, sounds like the tubing can lose it's grip, so I guess it's not superior to the factory shaft?

Barry, Well its all how you look at it....Mantua in the late 1980's and early 1990's started using the same sort of tubing.....BUT had the same issue, if it gets oil or grease where it fits onto the shaft its to hold on too, it looses its grip. thing is, EVEN those plastic hex drive cups that's on the loco now, if they get oil in them, where they fit onto the shaft the torque of the motor will eventually toque 'em loose too! So, really, its not a down fall the whole drive shaft set up is the same UNLESS the cups are made to have a set screw, and a flat spot on the shaft to over come that issue....BUT this also leads to an issue, you can only "tighten" a set screw in plastic, so much" before it slips and rips the threads up as its not metal were the set screw, is!
BUT the tubing sleeve has one good advantage, it lowers sound transfer from motor to gear box, to the loco from the tender, AND vibrations from running. AND you don't have to worry about "loosing" the shaft, the tubing even if it would get oil or grease on it won't fall off and be lost!!!!!!! This is the biggest reason I have had these in my shop for replacements.... lost shafts and the tubing prevents that.

| Thanks John. That was a good and thorough response. Mine seems to be working well now, but if I need to replace it, I'll be trying the tubing to see if it is quieter. Barry
