I finally got my Bachmann 4-4-0 to run! It's been a long haul, but finally, victory! I can't believe something so simple could be so difficult. The main problems were the deive shaft and the current pickups. I finally ordered a pair of sprung KaDee Arch bar trucks and put Bachmann 33" wheelsets in them. One problem solved.

In desperation, since nothing else seemed to work, I took a piece of .060x.125" strene and cut it to length and beveled the edges where they went into the sockets on the motor and the drive worm on the engine, and it worked.

I'm not sure how long this arrangement will last, because I have some more ideas, but at least I feel like I'm on the right track. Photos later.

IT RUNS!

Those driveshafts can be a real bear when there is some wear or play or abnormal interaction. They just seem to attract trouble. Glad you got yours back up and running again.

Thanks, Shaggy, but I thought I was going to have to smash this laptop before I got the 4-4-0 running. I still want to experiment with the driveshaft, and see if I can improve on it. In the mentime, the styrene driveshaft is working well, but needa a little breaking in

AMC, I had a Gremlin once. I kept it in Chicago so I could run to hobby shops on my layovers. Loved intimidating Cadillacs and Lincolns who always looked down their noses at me.

You ever going to get that dog shingled or does he eat the pancakes faster than you can apply them?

Addendum: I'm still not sure what the future holds for my venture into Mantua/Tyco, but I'm sure enjoying it for now. I guess I should post a LOTW. My sweet running V&T 2-4-0is a good candidate, or my 4-8-0 or 4-6-0

Well, more work on the 4-4-0 tonight. I believe I've got it running as smooth as I'm going to get it. I tried a brass drive shaft made from a piece of 1/16" square brass, but it made too much noise and too much vibration. I finally ended up with a piece of 3/32" plastic tube cut to length and squeezed the ends so they would fit in the impressions in the sockets, and PRESTO!

I had tried this before but got carried away, so I abandoned the idea, but tonight I got the length right, and the engine went right down the track - both ways. Now I can finish the wiring so the tender wheels pick up current and the four wheels on the fireman's side of the engine serve as a return. I believe I can hook the headlight in series with the ground coming from the engine and have a typical 19th Century headlight, too dim to do any good.I'll let you know how it works. maybe Ill event some pictures

I haven't had much time for the dog, lately. My Chia Pet has become infested with spittle bugs and has needed a great deal of attention. My neighbor who drives a Subaru, listens to Public Radio and eats a diet rich in tofu suggested that I look for an organic solution.

I figured a good starting point for an organic solution was organic solvents, so I used a mixture of benzene, naphtha and acetone. It got rid of the spittle bugs, but now, I'm having a hard time getting the chia to grow.

Add an open flame and you have a Chia tiki torch. Great for luaus, or the occasional societal unrest.

Don,
I would be careful about what I posted on any website. If the NSA intercepts your organic ingrediants information the EPA will be knocking on your door real soon
