Maybe it's bumper-car type.

you guys are awful!!!!!
Ben I think that truck you have pictured is wrong, you need the SAME type truck, but one with a talgo mounted coupler pocket for a X2F coupler.....(This might be easier said then done) to keep it factory, otherwise you could drill a hole and bolt on a draft gear box from Kadee, to except a Athearn type Horn Hook coupler.....

Ben, I think you're missing the point of the train...it's not meant to haul cars, just run around taking video. Here's your picture, so the front Cam engine hauls the rear engine, and there's no provision to haul cars at all. I think that's the way it was intended. here's your own picture showing both engines.

I still say its gonna take 10-20 HO scale guys to turn anyone, or all of the bolts out to remove the shell to access the motor for overhauls!!!!!

Ben, regarding how it originally worked: Look closely at the one that still has a coupler. Now compare to the one that doesn't. What's different? I think if you look more analytically, you will notice the discolored area on the trailing unit, at the end of the chassis, below the rear door, revealing where the tab that used to be there (and is still present on the cam unit) has been broken off.
As for how to fix it, good luck finding another tab and even if you do, chances are glue won't hold on such a thin joint. So the ideas already presented are sound. I'm guessing that Lionel still outsourced HO components from Kader then... indeed that's what those Blombergs look like, so a talgo truck from a junk Bachmann or Life-Like F unit should swap fairly easily. The Kadee box option is sound as well... you'll need to build a styrene pad to make sure it's properly aligns to the other unit.

Ben, if the units are a matched pair then how about a thin draw bar. Screw it to one unit and put a pin on the other. you get back to back close coupling and more reliable operation. I run AB sets of Bachmann FTs with this setup. I file a channel in the chassis and then drill and tap a hole for screw and pin.

I agree with Tony. It looks like the coupler pocket was part of the frame casting and has been broken off.
