And the Lionel HO's just keeps on comin', . Another Train shop find, going through the store's HO stash of items to fix-and-sell, I found this Lionel diesel, missing some axles and a cover, but otherwise undamaged. Not sure if it runs yet or not. Not my fav roadname, but at least it's a decent unit overall.

Yep it is Great Northern, I got one, that's got broken truck, side frames! Thing looks like it will pull pretty good! GE can motor in it, and all wheel drive.....I just got to figure out how I can either find a set of truck side frames, OR repair the ones, I have!

My LOTW is a Rivarossi Dockside with full valve gear. I got it cheap at a show with broken footboards and a damaged shell. I swapped the shell off of another broken engine and made new footboards then added some details to the shell such as better handrails, a 3 dimensional air compressor to replace the low-relief one cast onto the cab, a bell with a frame, a dynamo, a place to put oil in the bunker, pop valves, a whistle, and uncoupling levers. After that, a new coat of paint and some weathering finished the job.
All in all, it was a fun little project.

I have a full valve gear (deluxe) Rivarossi 0-4-0, but it's shiney. I like the look of yours. Is it painted or chemically treated?

Here's my locomotive of the week: a static, 1/25 scale model of "The General", made in the 1980's by MPC, that my Uncle gave to me (he got it an an auction for $2). This kit, unassembled, seems to go for a good sum on eBay. This one had had a few parts put together by the previous owner, and this is probably my one chance to put one of these together, so, slowly but surely, I am making progress on putting it together.

I actually have 2 of them, both painted in B&O, with different cab numbers, Heres one:

Poor light picture tho.....Full working valve gear also!

The valve gear is painted with Neolube, which is a kind of graphite paint.

EM-1,
It runs pretty well if the tracks and wheels are very clean. The drive is original, so that should tell you all about the motor speed, etc.
I'd like to return the compliment about yours. I see you've made a number of non-stock improvements. Aside from the obviously nice detail parts, the silver smokebox front and smokestack really dress up that engine.

Thanks guys1 I got more then this one! (I actually have the tendered version as well.....(the B&O, had 4 total). 2 were the Dockside loco's, oil burners, and then had 2 that were rebuilt with tenders, to burn coal...Of them, I have, they all have some details done, I thought about that neat pump detail, and at the time, I didn't want to hack it up as much as that so.....I left well enough alone to keep somewhat "factory". HOWEVER, I did repaint mine as you can see, the factory "B&O" versions "Baltimore And Ohio" was written outright, only in white, due to black and white pictures from the years they were around and Rivarossi went on to letter them, the "deluxe yellow/gold", looked "white" in a B&W picture......
Nelson, THANKS, what did you use to lighten that picture?
Don, I see you choose to have the closed deck pilot, where I kept the open deck look! The 2 differences on yours to mine and thought of combining the 2, would make for an interesting...........model!
Ken, No harm done, NICE (I've got to say the GP30 is my favorite diesel), anyway, but custom? Paint? Or more then? The GN paint looks AWESOME!

EM-1,
Do you have a picture posted anywhere of the tendered version? It sounds like something that would be a neat model to see.

Don, Sure do! Thing is, remember, the Dockside 0-4-0T and the conventional, look "similar" in some ways, and others, not so much, as the tender, gave way to a larger cab, and the removal of the boiler "saddle tank" for water, and was made to burn coal, instead of oil as the Dockside was burning.....
Granted all of these were yard loco's. (The docksides for the B&O), were dedicated to in-city service for the pier district of tight curves, and really difficult clearances, upon the coming of the 44 ton Center cab diesels-they took over.
so we toss in this one now!

Also, full working valve gear!

Thanks, EM-1. That's a neat little engine. The electrical pickups on the tender are probably a big help around insulated frogs. Based on the look of the valve gear, etc., it looks like it's also a Rivarrosi product, but in that case, one would expect a big motor in the cab. I don't see one, though. Is there a narrower motor in that engine?

I used Faststone: http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm
A really simple program for on-the-fly adjustments. I just did an automatic color adjustment, then just bumped the shadow and highlight sliders up a bit in the 'Adjust Lighting' option, then sharpened a bit before saving. My photos are never ready for prime time without some tweaking.

Don, I added a few "extra's" with this one! It also doesn't have the factory motor in it, I've "caned" it Its got a powerful little can motor in it that opens the cab up just a bit more.
BUT Rivarossi did have the thin profile motor to go into these, as well like the factory motor in the Dockside 0-4-0's. All of the Rivarossi 0-4-0's, the Dockside, AND this one, are based off B&O prototype locomotives. Believe it or not, the pilot is missing the foot boards.....They were on it, I had a serious derailment that took them off, and I had yet to replace them at the time of this picture.....They will be replaced, by means of custom made brass foot boards painted to match the rest of the loco and installed!

Nelson, I'll have to remember that! I take pretty good pictures to begin with but there are some. the lighting is difficult to get right even with the flash of the camera! All depends on the object being "shot" you know?
I will be keeping that link under favorites tho... as I have a few that need....something!

Barry, yep. mine anyway, do pretty well over #6 turnouts with electro frogs so......BUT, you have to keep the wheels really clean otherwise and I try to fill any "cavities" left open with some sort of weight.....For power pick up, AND traction!!!!

Actually it is an undecorated KATO SD90MAC that I picked up off of Ebay (very lucky find) So with the Kato drive it is probably one of the best running engines I have.
Your SD80MAC sounds like quite the beast, makes me think of those Athearn DD40's with the dual motors (working on one right now!)

J.B. Looks to be missing some details then! I have had a few Kato's that have a bit more details on them, unless you or someone have removed them!
Kato drive is hard to beat tho! Only done with extra motors!
