I noticed this on 2 of my TYCO operating virginian coal cars. The print is more bold on one than the other. One car is from late 60's and the other in the 70's(thinner printing). Seems TYCO changed fonts when in production COmpare photo's below

I've noticed the font changes on other cars as well (watch for them here in upcoming days).

As for the thickness of the letters - it could be the stamps used, or it could be the amount of ink used on a particular car (stamp is filled and does X number of cars.... thinning out toward the end).

I would LOVE to see a video or something, of a production line in action. It would answer SO many questions...!
