Tramp, Why the Tech 2? The MRC Tech 4 double power pack is a better unit and can handle more trains in motion then this one!
Also, might be easier to obtain as well!

| I was told the Tech 2 was better than the Tech 4. Is this correct? I don't know anything about power packs except they run trains. I am just going on gathered information. Any helpful infomation would be appreciated.

I have had both, and find that the Tech 4 is better then the Tech 2, HOWEVER, the Tech 2 is a good starting power pack for DC operation.
The only issue I would make sure of is that either of them, that you get has a surge protector for a short circuit and an overheat "shut down".....This will save your power pack if it gets a short circuit, OR overheats from extended use.....
Naturally being made by MRC, warrant's that they both have rectifiers in them, already which is the only other thing I'd look for in them!

Tech II have a common internal flaw as they age. I've never looked at one to determine just why but they'll cut out the power - not a short, it just quits. A tap or shake and it comes back. Have seen several that do this.
At this point a Tech II is state of the art like 1985 anyways. I have a dual-power 2800 but it just sits on the bench with leads to test engines from. The Tech IV is probably a better unit. it's certainly a newer design.
I had a single power Tech II, I forget which one, in the box in my show stuff for a long time, but I believe it did finally sell.

| lvrr325, that info is greatly appreciated. I have been looking on line for the Tech 4 280 and all of the online hobby shops I looked at are out of stock.

| Somebody just put one of those on eBay with a $49.99 Buy It Now, there are several others posted but they're anywhere from $72-$100.

| I run my layout with a tech 2 dualpower, very good power pack, definetley reliable, and also fairly cheap, I got mine for 20 bucks.
