I got most of the solder mess removed and after reviewing the instructions that I found on hoseeker.net, I realized there is actually very little soldering that is supposed to be involved. So here's a photo showing that the cab does indeed fit together pretty well just being sort of clamped in place by screws into the roof at the back and the front of the cab. The rear of the cab calls for a clip and fortunately that was a piece that was with this, though when I got it, the cab was all soldered up with extra pieces of brass inside the front and back to act as braces (but the cab still wasn't actually fitted together). Anyway . . . It's interesting that even if you work under a magnifying lamp, how a good close up photo will show you things you missed; like the raggedy running board under the left rear of the cab.

It's not fun when you have to clean up someone else's mess before you can even start! And it's even worse when that mess prevents you from seeing things correctly!

Hesitant about painting this, but the cast metal I think needs to be protected. And a little graphite on the boiler. Second coat on the sand dome; probably need 3. That will be my trial piece. This Floquil CNW Green is glossy, but I like the color. I'm going to see what dull coat does to the sand dome after another coat of green. I could dig a glossy finish, but I'm ignorant about air brushing at this point. Otherwise, for the most part, I believe I will leave the brass pieces without paint.

Ah! Painting with a brush. I think it could be OK and turn out to look pretty "vintage" given that I take my time and sand carefully between coats. We will see, I guess. Got the bell resoldered onto the bracket and a small enough screw that the bell will move back and forth in the bracket.

Yeah, I want to put Santa in the tender; cut out the coal and fill it with little presents! No, I just hadn't painted the bottom of the tender yet. I was trying to decide whether to do it black or green. I've since decided to go with the green. Trial and error. We'll see.

No, I'm digging it. I was just looking at another forum and thought, man, the moderator eliminated those comments about Christmas and such! Glad there still here. Sanded between coats on the tender and it looked kind of cool with the paint rubbed on. If I can be patient and allow this stuff to dry and then tediously sand between coats, the old "brush job" might pass. If not, I'm gonna rub the paint and spray it with dull coat. We'll see what happens.

Barry,
I have to agree with you on that looking good! What for lettering you plan to use on it? As that's going to really set it off when you add them!

NOW, you could go into taking a brush to add some dullcote here and there.......reason? THEN brush over the dullcote with alcohol to make it look like ice, or snow on the model..... and it actually doesn't look to bad either but, remember, you have to seal the decal lettering to the painted surface anyway.....

Okay John, with Barry's permission, here it is:

It's part of a Bachman Christmas set I got in '01 I think. And it came with the coal "load!" Seventy tons of coal should cover quite a few naughty children, I should think!

Barry, I'm not a painter so I can't speak in regards to the process, but I'm looking forward to the end result!

That is a pretty good bunch of lumps of coal for Santa to pass out Glenn.

I'm continuing to sand and repaint. Maybe getting closer to smooth. It's interesting how little defects in the metal and plastic show up as you sand and maybe get a little less visible with each consecutive coat. Maybe after this, I will opt to never try a gloss paint job again?

Glenn,
Yeah that's plenty of lumps to pass out!

Barry, WELL I wouldn't say to never use gloss paint again, as if you want to add decals, gloss is a lot of times better, ALTHO, dull or flat paint brushes on smoother then gloss, and then you can spray on gloss clear to make it shine to add the decal to that.......

My dad used to tell me if I wasn't good, Santa would bring me a bag of switches! Given the option, I'd rather have the lump of coal!

I'm still diggin' the green, red, and brass, Barry. Keep the pics coming!

Edit:
I just realized that my North Pole and Southern loco uses nearly the same colors: red, green, and a little "brass" (imitation gold). I think it works really well:

I'm sure your mogul's gonna look good too! (After this, no more hijacking!)

Glenn,
I do believe we are giving Barry, inspiration on all this!

But, I got one to add, speaking of "hijacking"....

I've love to find at least 2 more ofthese cars to have a 3 car set.....(I actually think, they only made 4 cars) but, I don't want to push my luck, but, I will keep my eyes open for them as I go places!

This is the only "Christmas" cars I got.....besides those I plan to make.....

PS. Glenn, I have to say the "switches" from what I know if it, wasn't those made for trains to run on either. mine, were "Willow Switches" by my Grandmother......when I deserved it anyway, and all that took......was ONCE! I'd rather have the board/paddle from Pap!

I'm getting this vision of an HO scale fireman, wearing an elf cap, standing on the coal pile in the tender and filling a large sack with lumps of coal, and then Santa, with one leg up on the tender step and arms out-stretched, ready to receive the readied bag of lumps of coal.

Apparently Santa had his own personal Diesel up there
Friend gave it to me. MU motor was toast so it's currently waiting for a conversion to powertorque. Got the new truck and wheels and commutator brushes, just need to dig up some new springs. And then it will be used for Christmas trains. I just might get it ready for December in the upcoming weeks.

I've got all the parts, and anything I don't got, I have spares of. It WAS an MU motor version but after doing every type of test possible to get the MU motor working again it still wouldn't work so I said screw it, took out that crap motor and will be installing a PowerTorque motor in it. Can't think of many who would actually convert something to a powertorque

Overall it's not too bad. Paints good, has all the handrails. I already fully cleaned the rear trucks wheels but that truck will receive some work as well. Will get it done soon. Not a current priority.

Below are some photos of when it arrived. Have had it since last December. My friend is an Athearn and Atlas nut and didn't want to deal with the tyco and mantua diesels he had so he traded them to me for some work on his steamers. Lack of time and will have made this engine project not progress as much as it should.

Well, after several (I do mean "several") coats of Floquil, I came to the realization there was only one way to correct the mistakes I'd make along the way, and that was to start over. So . . . parts are being cleaned up and filling in a couple of casting irregularities. I'll post more photos in a new topic.

Hi Ken, I saved the photo you posted of your disassembled 2 6 0 as a reference. That is a nice model. Likely older vintage than mine (with more parts made of brass)? The brass is nicely polished; time and gentle elbow grease? Or "magic"? I see you do have a roof in the photo; maybe missing a corner? One of the repairs I made to the roof for mine was to use a little epoxy to fill a fissure that kept showing up when painted; I guess like a "skim" coat of body putty for a car. I don't have an original tender for mine. I see them occasionally, but with a locomotive and haven't found one I want to jump on yet. So I'm going to use the modern plastic one temporarily; somehow painted to "fit in". One thing I didn't remove the paint on yet was the frame (cast, not brass like yours), so I'm going to put a couple things together today and see how it runs. I had it running before taking it apart, but I wasn't happy with it. While it was apart and I was looking real closely at things, I saw a few places where things could be aligned better. We'll see.
