Hello All, I was just looking at a Mantua 2-6-2 that's being sold on Ebay as "new" in the box. It looks new, and still has the shrink wrap. Strangely, though, the tender has a knuckle coupler, and the pilot has a horn-hook. Do you think this oddity could have occurred at the factory, with old pilot parts being used--or was it just too hard to convert the front to knuckles? Has anyone seen this before?

If I'm not mistaken, they never came shrink wrapped. Even so, I have a later one like this one and it has hooks front and rear. It may be new, but it's not NIB...that knuck was put on there later...

| Thanks, Shaygetz, I was a bit skeptical also. I passed on these thoughts to the seller, and refreshingly, he modified his ad to say the loco may have been handled or modified. Still looks like a nice one, though.

If you look at the foam insert, there's a good bit of marking under the wheels from being slid in & out of the box. The insert also doesn't have enough room to clear the coupler air hose, so it's bending it downward.

I had a Mantua camelback 4-6-2 in the box and it was shrink-wrapped, IIRC the shrink was on the foam insert only though, I was able to pull it out for photos when I sold it on eBay.
That was.... let's see, the show I got it at was a conflict with another so I didn't sell there... April of this year.

| Good point, Nelson-- I think that settles it. Even if shrink-wrapping could have happened like in Ivrr's example, the evidence shows the loco being removed from the box, probably more than once. I did put a bid on it, but much less than I would have for a new one. I've seen these in Pennsy livery before, but NYC seems a bit more rare.

| They wouldn't shrink wrap the whole box with it open, either. Perhaps done by a hobby shop or seller to display it.

I got to chime in here.....Mantua didn't for all I am a ware of, shrink wrap anything, besides the foam liner....
HOWEVER, I know of an old Hobby shop in Maryland that shrink wraped EVERY blue box Athearn they had in the shop.....The shop is long gone now, but the name was Plaza Hobby that was real close to Frostburg at the old location which was BEFORE they moved into the Mall, and then was there for I think 2 years, maybe not even that long and went out of business as their prices were pretty high consider the old guy on the Corner in downtown Cumberland, was well under Plaza's prices, by I bet $10.00 possibly $15.00 depending on the item.....
I always thought it was interesting that the shop at Plaza Hobby shrink wrapped EVERYTHING. My last words was, "Well maybe the cost of all the shrink wrap, and the machine to heat it..." as you see where this is going....
