I managed to acquire two of them, once I learned of their existence. They're hard to find, and go for $50-60 or more on Ebay. I bought one at a LHS for $35, the other for 40 I think. I DCC'ed one, it's slow but fun to operate on side industrial tracks. I like this Model 40, nice that they're bringing it back again.

| IIRC that was originally a Model Die Casting offering, their last new item before Horizon swallowed them up. So that version may exist also.

It was a roundhouse design. Good luck Ben, $50-$75 seems to be the flat price for a used one that I've seen For $25-$35 more a new one wouldn't be a bad way to go, maybe they are improved versions I hope.

Due late March 2014.
John
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

For some reasons, collectors are snapping them up, I assume. The few I've seen on Ebay in the last 6 months, over $70 each. Obviously due to unavailability, and they like them. Kinda the same with the old Roundhouse Boxcabs, those routinely sell for over $50-60 these days, the rarer ones 3 figures. Glad I got my two when I did. The original Roundhouse Model 40 had a factory error, the 4 diodes that affected the lights were soldered in backwards, if you DCC'ed it, you'd fry the decoder! Have to fix that before you can use a decoder, or don't use/wire up the lights. Easy enough to fix if you can solder. I have already fixed both of mine, and one has a Decoder in it already. Doesn't like switch frogs, it's so short, gotta have a "head of steam" going through or it'll stop cold. Only operational flaw I've found so far.

Jerry, you have a point, but I guess it comes down to what anyone is willing to pay.....Those "few" that will pay "X" amount of dollars as they gave it up to have whatever item, is what these companies set there retail for.....In hopes to have high sales....
Sadly, I can't justify $100 plus shipping, a good price on something I can put in my hand when just a few years ago that same items was $50 to $65! However, I know why they want such a high price.....I just can't stand those who would pay the most extreme amount for any one item, and then scews the rest of us by doing so......
I am glad to know this of the MDC Roundhouse, Boxcab, I must have 15 of them!!?? Sadly, I didn't pay over $10.00 for ay of them, and a few were bought at the same time in a "lot" sale, and I think I even got the "lot" for $10.00! I simply can not imagine paying $50 to $60 or more for them, as they really don't run for crap anyway.....And to make them run good, you gotta sink $30 more or so, into them for starters just to get them to run half decent.....
On the units you have, is it all wheel pick up electrically?

Yes, otherwise it wouldn't work well at all! All 4 wheels have pick-ups, but because it is so short, it's just not capable of going through crappy frogs, even the good ones give it fits if it's moving too slow. Just not enough wheelbase to clear the non-powered part before it hits the other dead spot. I mean, this thing is smaller than a Hustler, and that's saying something! They're cute, they're fun to play with on industrial sidings, but moving through switches is NOT one of it's good points.

Honestly, I just love having mine. A lot of fun to have it strut along the line. I use mine as a shop goat and occasional switcher. Hasn't been out of the big SLW shop in ages though.
