** Hi Ken; I have always seen cars of that type in Walters catalogs, molten metal transport cars used in foundries to transport metal in a liquid state from blast furnace to where it would be molded or shaped. The cars were not road cars, and never left the foundry property. Special cars used in production of steel and other metal products.
* I haven't been interested in the cars so only one I know of was a Red Ball model in HO. There are others. Walters may actually make there own.

Big kat & Top, I'm pretty sure they are used outside to transport slag form the foundary to where they were going to dump it out side.

Ken, Frank, and others,
The hot metal "slag" cars were used as pourers.....They also in the end of its life span (yes these type cars only lasted for a specific period of time till the heat and molten metal got to the integrity of the cars)....

Growing up just south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and just outside of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, I have to say I seen and visited these types of places, often! (I still would LOVE to get just the Walthers Blast furnace.....)

But, these slag cars, took molten metal from the furnace, to the mold complex.....ONCE these cars outlasted their existence, they were moved into service of cleaning up the work area inside, so you had chunks and suck hauled out of the buildings to a pile outside, and thats where you would see, tracked front loaders, piling it up OR loading it into rail cars to be hauled off....Tracked to keep from puncturing a "tire".

But These cars, I've ALWAYS liked them and have had an interest, just never seeked any out...BUT, I have a few buildings, the Walthers Refinery, And parts to the paper mill, that I would get rid of for the Blast Furnace......I can't get to picky, I only have so much space so.....

I'd trade just the refinery, for the paper mill if nothing else.....

As for the MOW cars from Walthers, I have seen them, they look really good I just can't, tho.....But as far as run, I don't know, they sure do look good tho!

~John

Many have tried to, and failed, ya just can't repair stupid...

Do NOT try to Idiot-Proof anything!!!! God, will simply create a better......IDIOT!
