On this special occasion the PGW has brought in all its English locomotives to the Frankford roundhouse at Bergen Point. Their 5 A4 streamliners can be seen here again together. Spencer. No.6, has not arrived as of yet. All celebrating the anniversary of the Mallards speed record. * The mallard is the one closest to the PGW Office building ( Lionel Station ). frank

So, what was the speed record? I never did get that memo!? I knew Mallard set it, I just never knew what the actual "speed" of it was and for how long It ran that fast!
Nelson, you know, your REALLY close to another "indoor" turntable! Matter of fact, the oldest one in America!

Ken, What on earth made it explode? "big bang theory" of steam where the boiler ran out of water?

My God, I had to make another posting, setting here thinking of 126 MPH on a steamer......I can't imagine the pressure that boiler was expelling into the cylinders at that speed, NEVERMIND the type of sheer pressure on the rods! DAMN! When she went past, it was merely a blurr! rods, wheels the whole ball of wax!
And people on the highway think 90 MPH is mad in a 3,000 pound car, I can't imagine a half a million pound machine at that speed! If not half a million, dang close! specially "laden", with water and coal!

John; If that is Baltimore I haven't been there since they fixed the roof. Like to see it again, along with Babe Ruth's house, another game at Camden Yards, with some Bog Powell barbeque. Top of the list is the see, I think, is Fort Mc' Kinley from the water with the big flag flyin over it and imagine there what Key had seen. frank

| The locomotive had previously had problems with the big end bearing for the middle cylinder, so the big end was fitted with a "stink bomb" of aniseed oil which would be released if the bearing overheated. Shortly after attaining the record speed, the middle big end did overheat and Mallard had to limp onwards to Peterborough. It then travelled to Doncaster for repair. This had been foreseen by the publicity department, who had many pictures taken for the press, in case Mallard did not make it back to Kings Cross

Frank, you would be right! Baltimore and Ohio, "Mt. Clare" in downtown Baltimore is the oldest roundhouse AND turntable in the USA, PLUS, the turntable is inside, and was and still is modeled................by ATLAS!
Sadly, I must add here something I'm NOT proud of....... I model.....and love the B&O, but I have never been to Mt. Clare........Believe you me, its a damn sin too! One of these days......
I will say tho, I have seen the 4th of July on the inner harbor, and that is the most impressive 3 hours of fireworks I have EVER seen! In New Hampshire, that 3 hours is what they see around here as the Finale!
I like the Powell BBQ, BUT, I'll take the old Iron pot over open flame bay crab....anyday! If not steamed that way, Maryland style crab cakes! DAMN I'll be finding some of those here directly if I don't shut up on 'em!

Ken, So the mallards had Gresley Valve gear? I can't imagine that! 126 MPH on Gresley valve gear.......That alone is even more impressive, nevermind having just 2 cylinders, but 3!

Back in the late 90's during the C&O 614 excursion we were told that she should be capable of 125 MPH... not sure if that's true or not, but we were clocked doing 94 on the return trip with over twenty passenger cars in tow and no diesel assist (on a stretch where the speed limit was 70, btw).
She could really move, and I think she looks great in her new Southern inspired livery.

Nelson, 614 was a beast for sure as that was a C&O design! I'm not sure I like or dis-like it in "Southern" paint.....
