This is my 1994 Mantua Rogers 4-6-0 named Oswald. The smokebox front was (graciously) donated by a Tyco "Spirit of '76" locomotive which I had gutted for parts. Yesterday, I took apart Oswald's rods to give her drivers a fresh coat of black and to cover up her chrome tyres from the sides. She is on a chassis from the Spirit of 76 since her original fell and broke a pilot step off. When I put her back together, her wheels kept jamming more than a Bob Marley concert, even after her rod screws and motor were checked over. A worrying thing is that for the "76" chassis, the rear and middle brass holders kept falling out. Is this a common problem, the jamming, or could it be the holder plates? Please respond quickly.

Reymond, Sounds like you might have a brass bearing those little "U" shaped parts touching the inside of the drivers.....OR they have a bad burr on them, have a closer look and see if there is a centering nub on the frame, and a hole in the brass "U" shaped bearings, this is to hold them in place....
IF not this, try loosening the motor screw, and see if it rolls with the motor worm gear making NO contact with the driver gear.....Miss-alignment of this can and will cause the whole unit to bind up.
IF it still binds, then be sure to check the siderod bolts, that they aren't hitting the siderod screws! IF one is turning itself out, a rivet in the side rods could be hitting as well as a siderod itself! Adjust/tighten as needed, DO NOT overtighten tho!
Any of this doesn't help, you might need a new worm gear on the motor, OR a new driver with a idler gear on it.

To make it a bit clearer, when I hold Oswald, like, a little bit over the track, she can spin fine, but when I set her down, she jams. Anyone have this added problem?

Rey, Sounds like you got a gearing issue....When held up no weight on the drivers she spins fine! Add weight which puts pressure on the gearing it jams up.....Look at the gearing and see if it might have a worn gear!

Crisis averted! Brought her down to the Original Whistle Stop in Pasadena and turns out it's a short from a snapped wire leading to the headlight (which I apparently need to sauter). Thank you for the advice though, I'll keep it in mind if she acts up again.

Reymond, she looks great in that paint job. I can't imagine how the brass bearings could fall out, tho, short of the bottom plate being very loose.
Btw, are you one of Hyde's buddies? He's close to you, and says "sauter" also.

Nelson, You know, I have one painted like this, with "B&O" in delux gold on the tender for lettering AND cab number! I always thought that was a great paint scheme!
Cab number on mine is 1366.....I painted it as when I got it, was painted in red oxide primer, nothing more and needed finished so.....That was back in a day when I remember seeing the same loco 4-6-0, painted in B&O in blue and silver, as the Dixie Belle, by Mantua! I think, mine is TYCO.

With mine, I was gonna paint it a really gaudy colour scheme similar to this -> http://omega-steam.deviantart.com/art/Oswald-In-MDRR-Drab-and-Decor-373833163?q=gallery%3Aomega-steam%2F25057678&qo=9 <- but it would have been too complicated, so I got some advice from a friend who modeled the Western and Atlantic and he said the current WIP scheme would be better as a turn of the century scheme, which I'm modelling (around 1911, to be exact)

I had the same problem when I rebuilt my 4-8-0. Turne out to be a siderod scrfew had tightened up and wouldn't let the rear wheels turn free, which of course transmitted to the rest of the mechanism. My solution was a brass spacer of a type that I found at WalMart. They are about 5/64OD, and work perfectly. As soon as I installed one on the offending crank screw, the problem was solved. If you can't find them at WM, send me your address via Email, and I'll send you some.
