Hello guys! I have two questions, first I have a C430 Chessie system but the nose decal is scratched up, is there a way I can remove it without messing up the paint? Also, do anyone of you guys use a train database to catalog your trains? I want to catalog my trains so I can see what I have thanks.

Phillip,
Couple things....The paint on the model should be OK, IF you use something like a strong Decal set, to loosen the decal IF Not and that doesn't work, try to use regular ole paint thinner (Mineral Spirits) with a Q-tip.....USE SPARINGLY! Only rub alittle at a time and if you pick up a "color" STOP......allow the thinner to air dry, and leave set for a bit to allow the paint to settle again as its lifting it, and will settle if not removed completely, or to thinly....

I have a Database for my whole shop on my shop computer of my own personal collection, AND the items in my inventory....All done through Microsoft Database.

I'm even working on a Model Railroader Magazine article database, on all the articles I or anyone else is interested in, from each issue I own.....since 1939!

Are you telling me you have every article since 1939?

Phillip,
Damn near! I'm missing a few issues here and there but NOT ONE single year is under 10 issues! (12 issues total, per year) and then I have MRC issues from 1954 (I think it is) to make into the database.....But from 1954 to 1976 MRC.

Most are in pretty good shape, specially the older ones....I do have a few doubles here and there as well.

The database, is going to help me keep the record right on the issues I need to find for those that are missing!

See, here about, I don't know, I had a friend that used to set up tables at the train shows as I did, and he and I got to have tables side by side a few years ago, and it turns out before the show started, he had a TON of magazines, and were marked take one, take 5 or take 'em all.....FREE. We got to talkin' on different things, and on the old stuff talk between us he'd grab a magazine from the year of the item we were talking over....And then he said it to me....These magazines are all free, I want to get rid of them.

Now, I sold a TON that Saturday.......BUT I brought home more weight in my car, then I took with me! These magazines are now in my library.....

Then about 2 or 3 years ago, I have another friend that was going to toss his out and asked me if I was interested, I was like sure, bring 'em over, he did.....I'm still going through those! Sadly, I don't have the space to "extend" the collection, as I only collect MR and MRC, nothing more, BUT I have years worth of Railroad Magazine, and a few others that I'm going to trade off to a fellow member here!

Phillip,
Thank you! I LOVE the older issues of MR and MRC....The newer ones don't have that "tech" type stuff I love so much and then the scratchbuilding articles as I like to read about and try out!

Which way did you attempt to remove the decal?

Nelson, you sniffing steamer smoke again after adding glue to put the smoke stack back on to that IHC 2-8-2?

Just how would your data base be any different from model railroder's 75th aniv. dvd with every issue from 1934? I found their search engine to not be all that good. Are you planing on a more extensive cross referencing system that would augment the MR data base? If so I for one would be interested in it.

My database won't cost me $XXX.XX to copy each article of them in that DVD/CD collection from MR PLUS the $200 to purchase them! I have the actual magazines!

As for cross reference, I'm not sure at this point! BUT I am adding in MRC as well, its not just MR that's in this database....

I got my copy of MR from a friend. If you were to reference your data base by dept. or subject matter rather than just the key word search, that would be great. As for MRC would you make it like their annual index, or would be more in-depth ?

Actually my database is searched by date, year, article, department, railroad name, and Author name! BOTH the MR database, AND the MRC database, they are mirrored databases!

Sadly, I got a L-O-N-G ways to go on it! I think I'm only up to 1952 on the MR one, and I think I'm up to 1963 on the other! Sadly tho, I won't have ANYTHING to add to it once I get to 1995, after '95, I quite collecting as they got pretty lame for "building" and how-to's, and such of articles as such after that.......THEN, there will be issues of month and year of those I picked up along the way for articles I liked and wanted to try or such, other then that I don't have complete years!
