I do business with MCM Electronics, and they sent me an offer for a 3d Printer. While researching the printer model I discovered this. It is cheap and has a .1mm resolution. There is a learning curve for using it, but maybe one could design and share the designs for parts. I do not think it is suitable for gears, but may work well for detail parts.

That looks like fun. I wonder if it could print passenger car sides and trolley ends and things like that.

Thomas,
The larger printers can, this one is limited to about 3x3 inches. There are larger ones, but the price goes up. There are services that will take your design and print it for you. I have just got interested in this type of fabrication. so I know very little about the details. I am posting today as I have just finished a project and this is my reward that I am giving myself. Otherwise I have very little time to research. There are a lot of examples on the shapeways site.

I too have recently become interested in these as they would be GREAT to make steam details and gearing of all sorts when needed......
