** I have 2 Varney product flyers supplied by railspec. I'll post them here. I have no idea of the year they were printed. They were given to me by Railspec . I think these flyers were included in train sets . I guess the only way to date this is to have some read it and notice a date I didn't see, OR, refer to the Varney's pricing and try to match it to another Varney catalog.
** A neat bit of info here is page 1 car and truck info. the first four I have seen and I think have all 4. the last 3 , the Van truck, stake truck, and dump truck I have never seen. Now the Buss is a can collector and maybe he or another can post some info or photos here on them.

** This is the second 4 page flyer. 1961 flyer
!961 is special for it is the last year the Diecast 2-8-4, the heavy 2-8-0, And all brass large tender. 1961 is also the only year the Varney released the Chemical tank with safety platform with long ladder. This car had a welded body so no rivets were seen. Also, additional supports to better stabilize the tank are seen on this car. This tank car was also sold on a display platform. After this year the two types of tank cars remained available, right into the Life -like era. A second car unique to 1961 is the Ohio Seamless Tubing gondola with one opened end and a high framed support to I guess hold a chain fall type cone along for adding in loading and unloading the tubing from this car.
** This second flyer is much more interesting to me. Yes oblivious is the additional road names for each type of car listed, when you compare one flyer's info to the other is a great help. The next is the addition of other cars in this second flyer. A second different type of tank car, a all metal reefer, a all metal box car, and the small oar car. Also added is the 2-8-4 Berkshire locomotive, and a separate long distance tender. The tank car to me is the most important for is a chemical car with a dome platform, with railings, and full side ladders. This feature is much alike to the Tyco chemical car. Hard to notice in the photo is the fact that the basic car's tank is altogether different. The tank used up to them was one with rivets and seams. This new one is a model of a seamless all welded version of the same size tank car. The little walkways on the sides of the dome on the old car are gone also. A car with this addition of the platform with railings is very hard to find. The welded version tank is much easier to find in many road names. it was released on only a few car with the platform. The tyco platform, maybe can be used to replace the missing platforms, Good luck in finding some of these Varney tank platforms.

Thanks for sharing. It would be fun to know the date(s) of these. I wonder what today's prices would be for the steam engines. One was $47.50 back then.

If I were to guess Frank,
Based on the use of the plastic F3 diesels, I would suspect sometime in the 1960's. All of which pre-dates me.

* Hi Sean, Bill. I think you are both right. the first is 1962, and the second 1961.
The first 1961, shows the metal reefer cars and the Berkshire locomotive. heavy consolidation, and all brass tender. 1962 catalog show none of these.
* 1961 also had 2 unique cars only listed in this year. A Chemical tank with safety platform with long ladder. This car had a welded body so no rivets were seen. Also, additional supports to better stabilize the tank are seen on this car. This tank car was also sold on a display platform. After this year the two types of tank cars, riveted and welded, remained available, but not with safety platform ladder or display stand. The cars themselves remained right into the Life -like era. A second car unique to 1961 is the Ohio Seamless Tubing gondola with one opened end and a high framed support to I guess hold a chain fall type come along for aiding in loading and unloading the tubing from this car. Also the bay window caboose, the metal box cars and reefers aren't in the 1962 flyers. This was their last year listed. (this paragraph is new and the first paragraph added to in a edit 8-28-17)

The last year the Berkshire was cataloged was 1968. The Greenberg book list both as 1961.

The bay-window caboose with radio fittings is 1958 or 1959 only, although they may have run a bunch and sold them until sold out.

The Dockside #2858, SW7 #2808 and the F3 powered A unit #2813 all appear in the Varney 1960 catalog. Sometime during 1962 Varney change their catalog numbers for locomotives from 4 digits to 3 digits. Dockside catalog number went from 2858 to 400, SW7 went from 2808 to 700, F3 powered A went from 2813 to 300 etc. So these flyers are prior to 1963.

** I noticed that one of the flyers was in HO Seekers. The 1962 one I listed second with the other cars and engine. The first one they didn't have. It is 1961. I have two different flyers for 1961. Both list the same trains just printed in a different format.

I did some editing on the 2 Varney Flyers I post here. I found them to be 1961 and 1962 Varney made a lot of changes in 1962. There were special cars made for only 1961. 1962 no longer posted some older products.
