The double pole, double throw switches are form Radio Shack. I think they still have them. The single pole are a lot older and not aviable anymore. You can search online for knife switches. Some should be there.

Gilbert at its earliest time had kits for the 4 different die cast freight cars. HO-4, and HO-5 were for tank cars. HO-4 came with decals for a TEXACO tank car. HO-5 came with a set of Sinclair decals. Decals aren't made to last till now, when produced in the late 1930's. I got a undecorated Gilbert tank car. I painted it and lettered it for the JCL (CNJ). I'll list it as HO4or5 due to different decals applied to it.

** Gilbert 1939 tank car built from a kit . HO-4 or 5. either kit no. will do.
JCL silver and black. Jersey Central Lines.

That tank car is really that old?Looks pretty good for it's age and with some added details and weathering, it'll fit right in with the modern stuff at the vast majority of train clubs.Honestly, it looks pretty good.

Well I finished another Gilbert kit car from 1939. This time the die cast reefer that would be Gilbert HO-2 or 3. One came with decals for a MDT ( Merchants Dispatch) reefer The other (PFE Pacific Fruit Express) decals. I found a set of Clover house SWIFT'S rub-on's.
Enough talk. Here it is.

The 4th and last of the original 1939 HO cars is the caboose. It is gilbert #8, a kit.

** With this car if I can get the parts I need to complete, I will replace the photo. This car also came painted and lettered for NYC as Gilbert car #120.

** The use of Varney Tank cars by Gilbert creating 2 different cars of the same number.
Here is Gulf Tank car #500. The longer car is a Gilbert car. Gilbert cars also have a dome vent not seen on the Varney tank car. Both cars are detailed in the exact same manner.
** Two views showing the differences. I have the same thing in 2 Mobilgas #517 tank cars.

For me it gets harder and harder to find Gilbert cars and locos I don't have. Last weekend I did get one. I had car No. 520 a Chicago Northwestern Reefer. I got 33520 the newer CNW reefer. Here you can see that Gilbert remade their 5 digit number car identical to their original one, changing only the number.

Bill, thank you I got luckey. I had 19 before and I got stupid and sold it. I never thought I'de find 36 and 31. I thought I would live with just the Pennsy ones. As thing happen always, I was able to get them almost at the same time. That was almost 3 years ago. I seen 19 a few times. always very high priced. Then there it was again at Hamburg. In its own box. Had a sticker price 125. So I just held it and admired it, It is like new. Most dealers don't come down in price on pieces like this one. I guess I was happy just to see one again. I got ready to take a photo of it when- Then the dealer and I started talking. Conversation is what train shows are all about. It seems that the dealer had another 19 at home or could get another. He sold it to me for $80. without the box. 19 is the last one sold with smoke and cho-cho sound. 31 and 36 sold later, don't have cho-cho sound, and the Erie was sold without smoke.
The 0-6-0, 6 of them were made. The first numbers 155 and 433 are very different from each other. 155 was the first. it had the old style hook couplers. many people changed them to whatever the state of the art in couplers was at the time. The same goes for the tender trucks. Originally they have those old style solid poor detailed side frames. I've seen some 155's and others at train club open housed really dolled up and reworked. Still retaining the frame, pilot, loco body, tender, gilbert detail , whistle, safety valves, bell, marker lights - front & rear, but new drivers, reworked valve gear, motor and gearing replacements with the new shorter can motor giving space for a complete cab. Modelers get to like their old equipment and won't like it go. They keep rebuilding them.
At Hamburg some other train lovers had to get many good buys. I was at different tables, and the more common 4 (31004) complete and for $35 asking price. A 433 was there also reasonable priced. There were other also. not so well priced but if I can get $45. knocked off of one. why cant someone else. Only reason I went home was $21. in my pocket.
I'm talking to much. C U latter.

A remarkable collection of Gilbert. I didn't know that HO
was even commercially available in 1939. Did the older
Gilberts come with the X24F coupler, or a bar and pin

Original Gilbert had a big hook. It is on all the pre war cars and some directly after the war. In the 1950 they went to the NMRA X2F type.
On these old coaches you can see the big hook coupler.

** Back to Gilbert HO of a more recent time. I covered some gilbert cars that were made using Varney parts before. The Single dome tank car 517 Mobilgas, and the Gulf single dome tank car 500, and the 3 dome Gulf tank car. I finally got the #501 CB&Q 2 bay coal hopper in a gilbert car. I have a couple of the Varney car types already. So here is just a side by side on these two car. Both sold by Gilbert. They are to very different looking cars. Both cars use Gilbert Coupler pockets. Off hand I can say that #500, #501, #510, #511, #518 all came with a Varney as well as a Gilbert car. Now 500, 518, and 511 are all tank cars. 501 and 510 are hopper cars. All except one used identical colors and lettering. Only as you can see #501 the CB&Q hopper had different lettering though the same number. Now the only one I am missing is the Gilbert version of the #510 Monon covered hopper car, if their is one?

Another Varney-Gilbert car is Monon #510 2 bay covered hopper. I am sure there is a gilbert made car also in number 510. I just haven't got it yet. This car is a Varney car and I think there is a Gilbert hopper car made also with the same number.

* Well last weekend I got lucky again. The #518 Koppers tank car by Gilbert I have acquired at the Wayne NJ show last Sunday. The photo is in the condition I got it. The dirt cleans off. It has it original trucks and couplers, even what is left of a safety platform around the dome. It should clean up nicely.

Some nice stuff Frank... On your prewar kit cars/locos, about 15 years ago I reproduced all of the prewar freight and passenger car decals and the Hudson also. I am out of them at the moment but I still have the artwork and the printer to make them. If your interested in actually restoring any to catalog correct, LMK and I'll let you know when I make them.

The Gilbert Koppers is one of my favorite cars. Keep, your eyes peeled for a junk one with poor stickers to cannibalise for the platform. .

* Joe when you do them keep me in mind. I would like to do cars of other lines with those decals. Do you add something in small print saying that they are custom painted, reproduced, or refinished by. I would add that to the car and with a very fine tip flair pen put may name or toptrain or whatever.

I used to use "refinished" stickers on the underside of the car when I was restoring them back in the late 90's per TCA standards. The reproduction Sohio and Cities Service tank cars were engraved in the bottom of the shell with REPRODUCTION and what number it was in the run. The reproduction Sohio pictured below is number 3 of 12. I'm not sure who owns the Cities Service reproduction pictured below but I believe it was originally sold to Paul Beno making it car #10 of 15.

* A big addition to my Gilbert HO collection I got a few weeks ago and haven't done a new good photo of it till today.
** New addition is #31022 C&O Alco RSD 5 or 7, with bell ringing at slow speeds for yard working.

Frank,
That one looks pretty clean... I'm not sure how familiar you are with them but be careful if/when you run it. The Gilbert 430, 31017 & 31022 all have a tendency to get very hot after a short run time and can and will melt the shell if you don't keep an eye on them. A good servicing helps by reducing the excess friction due to old hardened grease but they aren't an easy engine to service.

By far, the Gilbert ALCO DL-600 is one of my favorites, especially the C&O livery. I attached a pic of one of my 31017 and also a unique factory error 430 without the gray roof vent.
