Nice. It's a shame. I and others I know used to pitch those or give them away, back when we had H0 layouts. Motor stuck out too far.
Had we known in 30 years can motors would show up, we'd have put them in a box.
Along with all the early Mantua and Tyco F units...but those because they always smoked the motors on us.
Got real good at drilling the long rivets out of the power trucks for cleaning and lubricating, replacing with screws.
Always figured any manufacturer who riveted or otherwise permanently assembled power blocks considered them to be throw away.
We out-smarted them.

B6sa #155 on turntable. This is the first PRR B class type and number released by Gilbert. It is the only one with the cab numbers cast in raised numbers 155. All others are applied. Don't know why I used loco weather black to color the loco. I guess to make one different.

** 417 and 403 are 2 B6's that I repainted. Here they sit on ready tracks between the roundhouses.
* I did a quick up grade in detail by replacing the tender behind 403 a repaint, with a Bachmann one. The raised coal bunker, different marker lights, backup light, and water fill hatch give it a different look. It came out ok. 417 I have also redone .

* Another photo same area as the last. Different view. The A5 and B6 403 have just returned, not quite rolled back yet to storage spots. Their is a rear view B6 403's tender. differences from standard tender can be easily seen. It is a Bachmann Tender, and as can be seen one of greater detail.

B&O 31031 pulls into yard to pick up train. 31031 connects to Gilbert #117, a die cast factory finished model of a Leigh New England composite gondola LNE#15503. This is one of the original cars made by Gilbert in the late 1930's.

If you mean the operating hopper, the Revell one was lettered CB&Q identically to the Varney non-operating car that was also sold as a Gilbert. The Gilbert operating car came in the C&O colors, but Revell had a non-op car also with similar lettering.

I think these guys all used the same sources for their lettering information.

Mine says Gilbert on the bottom Honest But if it was made by Revel that I'll understand
But the numbers on the car is the same as the serial number as the set

** Frankford yards are seen here full on Gilbert Cars. Only the black F3 in the yard, and the non revenue (caboose area) have some non Gilbert cars.

Nice stuff, guys. The first time I saw HO Gilbert was at the old Marshall Field's department store in Chicago. I always looked at it as a sellout to the S gauge line. I'm glad not everybody saw it that way.

Back in those days, when my family went to Chicago, the first place I headed was to the 5th floor to see the AF trains. They had a huge layout there, amidst a toy section to die for. Everything a kid could dream for and more! The age of cheap was still a few years in the future. The S gauge was the first to go, starting in 1958, in the midst of one of the largest selections in Gilbert history. I never followed the HO line. How many HO locomotives did Gilbert eventually offer? I saw the RSD-7 photos (mislabeled as RSD-5's), and the Lackawanna F-3 was great. I couldn't look at the websites, because I'm still having computer problems.

Geat stuff, keep it coming

Very nice!

Do any of your American Flyer engines smoke? I've always wanted to get a smoking engine.

I like the water tower in your yard. Do you know the maker?

Hi Mark; On Hudson locos, the old ones, with the smoke unit in the tender, it is hard to find one that works. The later Hudson's with the smoke units in in the loco seem to work good. All the Gilbert 0-6-0s I have, the smoke units work on them. The Erie 0-6-0 doesn't have a smoke unit, it is how they were sold. Now the Marx HO Hudson has smoke also. It works well. Revell made a Union Pacific 0-6-0 tanker that had a smoke unit in it, also a spring loaded plastic box full of be-be's. a eccentric attached to a driver moved the box and when released it snapped back causing a chug sound. It operation it chugged and chugged, while puffing its smoke.
Also if your layout is in a small room you can easily fill it with smoke from one of these locos. What is cool becomes annoying right away.

Ha ha, I never thought of there being that much smoke! That is interesting. I guess the key is to not put so much fluid in so it gets used up quickly before you get smoked out.

I'd like to find a nice 0-6-0 someday. Always wanted a smoking engine.

Thanks!

Mark; Another old loco with smoke is the Revell 0-6-0t Omaha. It has not just smoke but a chug-chug sound.
In this weeks Loco of the week Catford ken has posted a photo of his. And a very nice loco it is.

I got this Gilbert rare Erie combination bay window and copula caboose at Allentown yesterday. Last owner wrecked it. It is a good car for a repaint.
