As well all know my pride and joy is a little custom Mantua 0-4-0 Shifter #5, the story behind her I've told many times on here. Part of my fathers collection given to me in 2007 when I was only 10 years old. #5 or at the time Santa Fe #99, arrived in deplorable shape missing a cab, smokebox door, numerous tender steps, valve guides, axle bearings, and everything else was chipped up or just plain worn out. But 10 year old me knew that I would restore her someday, I made it my goal. Work started in 2010 when it was stripped and the main parts were painted. In 2011 the boiler shell cracked on the bottom half of the smokebox which is very common on plastic boilered shifters. Anyways then over the next year motor got lost in storage, drivers were discovered to be out of quarter, tender was msising its' steps already so it still didn't look good. In 2012 I decided I'd make my Birthday, May 1st the deadline for its' completion, a parts engine was purchased late April and arrived 4 days before my birthday on April 26th. On April 27th the locomotive was finished and she fired up and ra nfor the first time in over 30 years! After years of set backs and a 5 year long restoration it was the best feelign to get her done. Again if you want to read full length in depth just click on the last link to my websites story about it. Anyways, I'm here to talk about the engine that put #5 back in service, a 60s metal boilered shifter, #99. See about a week after #5 was done I decided I'd start #99's own restoration to someday put her back in service. All that was left of her was the boiler, frame, cylinders, tender I bought and restored months prior to her aquisition, and odds and ends off #5. See #5 got #99s running gear, tender, and motor. I painted the boiler, frame, and cylinders and had some old mantua 0-4-0 drivers to put under her so she started coming together pretty fast.
/tyco/forum/uploaded/scvr66/20130504121556_9.jpg This photo was taken in June 2012 shortly after 99s construction, she's facing the engine she gave parts to, the SCVR #5
However, progress was slow in that once we assembled all we had, that was it, we could go no further due to the lack of parts. Didn't take a genius to know we'd need a parts engine for her but in the future. Well after a year of moving around to various locations in and around the SCVR shops, I decided that on the year anniversary of 99's aquisition I'd put her back into service. So I found a mantua 0-4-0 shifter buy it now for $20 that was complete, and my dad bought it as a gift for my birthday and yesterday when it arrived it was quickly photographed, then stripped of the needed parts for #99 which were the same as #5 needed, the complete running gear and motor. So within 30 minutes of the parts engine's arrival #99 had already been brought back to life! What I find empowering about this story is the fact that I will restore practically anything I have. Cause just a year ago #99 was a parts engine helping put my favorite #5 in service, and a full year later she's brought into service. This is typical of me, restoring parts engines cause I'd rather not have a ton of parts lying around my shops. So I'm so glad #5's benefactor now has the chance to do what she was built to do. There will be a doubleheader between the #5 and #99 in the upcoming days as a celebration of the SCVR's shifter duo. Just as a side note, NO I don't plan on restoring the parts engine that brought #99 back to life.. The parts engine for 99 also allowed parts to go to my big six restoration, #14! So this one engine will have brought 2 engines back to life! Who knows, if I find an old Mantua 0-4-0 engine good for parts, 99's parts engine will be restored as SCVR #19 but don't expect that for a while... Sorry for the long story but it's an intresting story! Photo time below!

I am having temptations of wanting to rebuild that one too.... See I don't fake restoration scenes cause I got so many engines that I am actually working on that I don't need to fake it
