Went to another show this past weekend, and got some interesting stuff got there a little late though and missed some nice stuff! Also have a question about some of the items I bought. First some pics.

This was the best deal of the day, got this whole lot for $3. The AHM RS2 is missing the motor weights and fuel tank, and the Plymouth is missing the wheels and cover. The lot is mostly mantua, with some penn line and varney thrown in.

/tyco/forum/uploaded/PRR_Tyco/20130501222825_DSCF0006.JPG

Got this as a lot but I really only wanted the tyco Blue Coal car, but since he only wanted $10 I couldn't complain.

/tyco/forum/uploaded/PRR_Tyco/dscf0015be.jpg
Also got these mow cars, one is a life like and one is a tyco.

Got these two Chessie F7s for $10 one is a dummy one is powered, but non working. Unfortunately the one with the motor had both the reduction gear and one of the drive gears snap off so I had to replace the block. I had another of the same so it runs now. The dummy has tight trucks ( they don't swivel well I think the block absorbed moisture, is there any way to dry it out? Would heating it up work?)

/tyco/forum/uploaded/PRR_Tyco/dscf0021r.jpg
Got this AHM Plymouth but it is missing the wheels and cover, the motor works but I can't seem to find a picture of what the wheels/ gears look like. Does anyone have a pic of what the wheels should look like?
/tyco/forum/uploaded/PRR_Tyco/dscf0009p.JPG
Got this as part of the first lot, does anyone know what kind of trucks these are? They look a bit like athearn's sprung trucks but I am not sure.
/tyco/forum/uploaded/PRR_Tyco/dscf0010oz.jpg
Also got these in the first lot, but the silver streak caboose has messed up chrome. The guy selling the chessie systems also had a c430 silver streak and santa fe c430 but someone was walking away with them as I walked up
/tyco/forum/uploaded/PRR_Tyco/dscf0014so.jpg
/tyco/forum/uploaded/PRR_Tyco/dscf0018rn.jpg
You can't really tell, but the Silver Streak has some kind of black sploches all over it like the chrome rotted or fell off.

Nice score on your purchases - Your Silver Streak caboose won't clean up as those black spots are from elements exposure-handling of car with oily greasy hands and possible cleaning with abrasive chrome cleaners in past - i am the resident expert on the finishes on Silver Streaks and golden eagles lol.

Ahh I see oh well lol. Any ways to prevent it on good cars? What would be a good thing to clean them with, as I have some chrome tank cars I want to clean up and don't want to ruin them as they are in good condition.

The Varney hopper uses Varney trucks. Slightly different from Athearn. Can probably interchange them and most wouldn't know the difference.

That particular car with the 501 road number is actually a Gilbert piece made by Varney - they're fairly common.

** Well PRR_Tyco, quite a haul. You must have been the guy pushing the wheel barrel around the hall, because you'd need one to carry all that neat stuff. Yep ! That CB&Q hopper is a Gilbert as you've found out already. The Cities Service, PC Boose', CB&Q box, MKT box, And SP box are all Tyco-Mantua. What's left of the old time Mopack box is a AHM I think, and the colorful Union 76, 3 dome tank, what will be a very nice piece. Interesting in the second photo are the Penn-Line pieces. The black C&O hopper and the PRR Boose' namely. The other 3 pieces, the 2 diesels and Santa Fe reefer are AHM.
* You seem to need to buy some broken cars with good trucks to get the parts need for the restoration work. Good luck to you.

Thanks Ken! Those help loads! Now I just need to root through my parts and see if I have the right ones, now that I have an idea of what they should look like.

Yep I got a lot more then I thought I would and for dirt cheap, as at this show it is mostly Lionel and American flyer stuff with the occasional HO scale thrown in. I definitely like the PRR caboose, as it feels very heavy and looks nice. It either has a metal shell or very heavy plastic. I do need to get some trucks for them but trucks can be had for cheap on junkers, I do want to fix the Gilbert CB&Q car as I like cars with sprung trucks. I also need some gears and a motor for the AHM RS2. I think I am going to take and re motor it with a CD rom drive.

Is mantua the same as tyco? I have a bunch of cars that are from the early 60s that are all mantua, are they the same as tyco? I have a 2 bobber cabooses, cattle cars, and 2 boxcars all with metal floors. Did tyco ever offer a bobber caboose?

if that AHM Plymouth is anything like the Tyco version
Only one wheel has a gear on its axle & the other doesn't
There's a cover that holds the wheels in place
Nice haul btw You has a few I needs hehe

Everything Mantua was offering in the very late 1950s became Tyco or was sold as Tyco in the 1960s. Check Tony Cook's Red Box guide for details.

I think you can sub Athearn trucks on the Penn Line caboose if needed. It has a die cast frame with a Varney plastic shell.

That Gilbert 501....look at the sideframes in the photo. I have a lot of those sideframes. Use straight axles, not pointed. Have had about zero success in finding straight axle wheelsets anymore. Maybe someone knows, and I can fix some of this stuff!

That is what it looks like, It has one wheel that has a gear, and the other is just a straight wheel. I actually found a straight axle off of a bachmann parts unit that I have, and the driver with the gear almost works but doesn't mesh just right. I am hoping it takes the same cover as my other AHM ones since I should have a cover laying around. If not some styrene might work. And which ones were you looking at?

Every Gilbert by Varney and Varney I'm aware of uses pointed axles in the sprung trucks, and I think the solid frame trucks use the same wheels/axles.

If you look carefully at the photo in question, you will see the journal holes in the sideframes are not for pointy axles.
I have a bin in my parts drawer full of those.
Now, look up a bit, at the right side of the car. See the wheelset?
I have seen those....long shank, stubby point....they don't rub on the point, rather on the long shank.
Now, for all we know, with many changes in trucks over the years, anything could have happened.
We only have three sideframes, can't see the back of two of them, could be mixed in from elsewhere, who knows.
Oddly, and it makes no sense, the coupler pocket cover looks like the old Hobbyline cars I have, but they didn't make a short 2-bay I've ever seen.
The 501, red, CB&Q is Gilbert for sure.....just those covers. Been a long time since I dug into those Hobbylines.
