Growing up, we never had any money, so if it wasn't given to us, we went without as far as trains. I always wanted an Athearn metal crane.....still don't have one. But, in a big box of junk, I got this. Somebody told me it was AHM:
And, I needed a crane tender. I found this tender in another box of junk...it's a Marx. Roof was gone, toolboxes gone, trucks gone.....I had some destroyed Athearn cupola cabooses, whacked the roof to fit, slapped trucks and coupler son it....still have to glue the roof down, probably do windows first. I have the make the upper sheave cover for the crane...it's the rectangular piece that comes up and the cables rise. It was missing. I have some black styrene, I can make one. Dave

Crane is a 1970s Lionel HO piece, I forget who made that for them but it only came in undecorated.

I believe you. Says Made in Austria on the bottom, has the typical AHM style X2F mounts, where you lift a tab in the truck mounted pocket to remove the coupler. Dave

Austria is Roco. I don't have the 1970s book but I remember reading it's an oddball piece, Lionel must have bought one large run of them and sold out of inventory - and they didn't sell well until blown out on clearance, because that's why my dad bought one.

I have to add here that I actually do have one of those old Athearn "Metal" cranes! IT "HAD" the 63 axle, "Buckeye" trucks that were sprung and equalized, BUT I had a tender, those had to be put on, and then replaced them with the ridged truck, of the same, in metal as well, just not sprung......I just have not gotten around to assembling it yet as I took it apart, from the first owner before me, gluing the pillow block pulleys solid to the snatch block frame. I also plan to build it and paint it as well, as it was all bare metal, and the first owner painted it flat black with no lettering....
