As I recently posted in Loose Ends, I recently picked up a Brown Box Tyco Chattanooga 2-8-0 with the tender drive. Now, before I started to write this, I did some research on the TYCO forum and found out what I could about the pain-in-the-a$$ PT drive; the attempts by a number of you guys (including one of our newer friends, Darth Santa Fe) to repower the tender or power the locomotive, and anything else I could.
So...
1. One person mentioned using an Athearn SW powered chassis and replacing the whole tender works with it, replacing the trucks with regular ones and metal pickup wheels (and a pickup strip going to the motor, I presume) and then using the tender shell/
2. Another (Ray M. ) showed his adaptation of a can motor to the locomotive chassis.
3. Yet another (Redneck??) showed a substitution of a CD motor for the original PT motor.
Having successfully repowered several engines, I would like to tackle this one, as the loco shell and tender are in perfect condition.
It seems that just replacing the drive unit of the tender and remounting the tender shell would save a lot of grief, given what I've read.
I would appreciate the perspective on this from those who are more familiar with the Chattanooga 2-8-0 and it's shortcomings/ possibilities.
Thanks
Siouxlake/ Ron

I know I mentioned using the Bachmann 70/44 ton chassis, that's how I repowered my 0-8-0. Just add some mounting lugs (square plastic stock) and add some weight and bam, new tender drive...
just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

You could use some Mantua parts and make a new drive similar to that of a Mantua steamer. I'm in that long process and using the open frame motor and a 0-4-0 dRive gear axle and the Chattanooga drive will fit it. Not much work required to do so. Just waiting I'm parts. A cdrom is a idea if you wanna keep it all factory original.

NOPE not a die grinder......... a Dremel will do the trick!
I, myself, plan to try each one of these ideas on repower and test each the same and see which works the best! EXCEPTION, is the Bachmann 70 or 44 ton frame, those frames, are strickly made for diesels and simply do NOT pull enough to my liking for a 8 couple steam loco!
Had a notion to try something not yet mentioned......I got a few Ernst gear drives for under the Athearn RDC's that have Hi-Fi drives to gear them, and see if an Athearn motor might fit under the shel with a frame from an RDC used to fit the Tender, shortened, with Athearn type trucks, BUT the use of metal wheels like the diesels, instead of the RDC trucks and see what might shake loose.......Hmmm its an idea when I'm feeling up to it!
AND if size, or space is an issue, I wonder if the Ernst gear unit for a Athearn Hustler would work? Be small in size if nothing else!

Even if it fit, you'd have a very slow, very noisy 2-8-0. The wheelbase is also longer than the PT truck.
A Dremel does work great for a disk drive motor transplant. Use a steel cutter... it makes fast work of zamac.

Nelson, I was thinking more to the lines of the 0-8-0 due to speed restrictions......(I know I didn't mention which one I was planning)
As for noise.....Hmmmm I got a few of them, in diesels that you can barely hear run, HOWEVER I have also restricted electrical power to be lower then 12 volt to the motor so to keep the noise down of the "wound" up or spooled up electric motor, as I have seen where 12 volts on a motor with a Ernst drive trans. makes the thing howl!
I'll give it a try on one of them.....See what I can literally "shake" loose!
