I'm wanting to use a reed switch for a special project. Is there such a thing as a DPDT normal open reed switch or could 2 SPST NO reed switches be used?

The questions you ask. I wonder what kind of things you are building.

I know very little about reed switches. Have not heard of DPDT variety.
I think putting the 2 spst together would work. Depends on what you are trying to do.

Mr Justin,
Generally a reed switch will not carry enough current to power a HO engine.
You could use the reed switch to activate a DPDT relay and accomplish your goal.

John

It's a small small motor with a very light load. How would I wire up this idea of yours?

I'm using a AA battery and radio shack has a 5 VDC DPDT relay. Will a AA still work?

Mr Justin,
Here is a circuit that may be a solution.
You will need both a normally open and a normally closed reed switch.
You will also need a 3PDT or 4PDT relay with 2 to 5 Amp contacts.
The 12vdc power supply for the relay can be a small wall wart.
The power pack will be needed to control the speed of the train.
This is a simple control system, so speed and the location of the reed switches
may need adjustment

There are a few commercial systems that are designed for this function. I am not sure who builds them.

you could use a 5 volt relay, but you will need 3 or 4 batteries for power

Regards,
John

EEK! I wanted to cram this into a 50' stock car with other stuff in there. Not sure if it's gonna fit now!

Mr Justin,
I guess I do not understand the goal of this project. More detail might be helpful. Bear in Mind a reed switch is only switched while in a magnetic field. It does not switch on and stay on when the Magnet is moved.

The supplied circuit was designed to run a single train on a track that will auto reverse at both ends of the track.

Regards,
John

It might have helped from the outset if you would just tell us what you're trying to build.

OK, my secret build is a my version of the Lionel Giraffe car as I figured electrically operating the giraffe than mechanically would be better or worse.

You could use a solenoid to move the giraffe. Or you could use a live miniature giraffe and train him to duck.

Or you could just buy a Lionel giraffe car.

LOL! The car is cheap because you never do find the activator or tall-tales. Just trying to think of a small enough yet strong solenoid and how I could use it. Thinking like a e-unit coil I could buy or pull from a clunker and make a spring loaded plunger mechinism.
