OK...time to vent...I know you guys and gals will either help me laugh or understandor both..
I sold a perfectly good (like new really) Model Power E7A on evil bay..(in the original box).when it showed up, the nice lady said it didnt work (bought 2 engines)...the other one did ( A Mantua, go figure)... anyway...I said OK...send it back...I'll refund your money...well, I got it back in pieces...fuel tank assy broke off, 2 steps broke off (one missing) and motor lose and jostled around inside the body...When I tested the engine, it worked fine...(????)...so,I've come to the conclusion that I will never sell another powered engine on evil bay again. A costly auction...but, the silver lining does shine a tad...I've completely repaired the engine, and I'm just gonna keep it. I can always use a good strong E7A...
I guess everything happens for a reason. Thanx for "listening" wah..wah...wah...boo...hoo

The concept of service employees paying attention to "handle with care" went out with reel-to-reel tape recorders and the Four Seasons! - I see drivers just toss boxes like they were filled with cotton balls when they deliver to my workplace- even if marked fragile or otherwise. They either can't read or are more concerned with their delivery schedule than concern for the custoimer's items.
This is the new service era- where you get "served with ice" if you complain...

If enough is 624 purchases... I've done it...
If Kroger doesn't meet my standards, I don't complain about them everywhere...I just wouldn't shop there.....

| I bought a chatt 2-8-0 once off ebay, was mint but came broken. Lucky I had parts to fix. At where I work we have fedex come in everyday and you should see the way they handle packages there as they put on their truck. The guys always in a hurry and in a bad mood if he has alot to load but oh well thats his job.

My train deliveries from USPS have been fine. One seller sent a loco unprotected in a bag and it was trashed. Another person sent an engine in a padded box in a bag and it and the parts were fine. I think good sellers need to be good packers.

Thank you...I too believe that the problem starts just before the box is sealed and is only magnified by the handling along the way. I don't seal my boxes until they get a shake test...and I mean SHAKE test. Then every so often I give them the 3' drop test, my kids love this one. Of all the packages I've ever mailed, only two were damaged along the way, and in both cases, the blame was mine and my poor packing.

Hold on caboose1, I think I see something that doesn't line up here.
You sent both engines to the lady, and she said that one worked and one didn't, right? How much does she know about model trains? Does she know how to clean wheels, check contacts, or oil moving parts? I can see a contact getting bumped out of place during some rough shipping and, when the lady tests it, it doesn't run.
So the lady says it doesn't run and then sends it back. I'm wondering if this is where the damage occurred. How well did she package the engine? Was it done well in a box with peanuts and bubble wrap? Or was it just thrown in a bag?
Also, could you post of photo of the damage? The damage you're talking doesn't sound much like "it got jostled around in transit" damage. I'm wondering if "oops, I dropped it off the table so I'll send it back" damage is closer to the truth.

yes weekender I'm thinkin that too.... its happened before...youre right I may be jumpin the gun here...2 steps broke off one side...(one missing) fuel tank/air tank assy broke off...motor and clip loose in the chassis....It obviously arrived in good shape...how would one engine be fine (w/o a box ) and the other one (in a factory styrofoam insert box) be bad.....shouda' thought of that BEFORE I vented...

| Right now I am in a dispute with someone on ebay because the said my package arrived broken. Not only did I bubble wrap it twice I sent the stuff in two boxes. The problem was the set cost him $700, but the only thing he really wanted was the 1946 locomotive which was a Lionel Berkshire #726. He said he would keep the auction if I refund $250, I told him "no", because it was like I was being extorted. What really sucks is that his first email came two weeks after he received it. No matter what, I am not paying that money back, ill lose me ebay privileges first.

I had bought 4 locomotives at different time from Ebay, all were Bachman Spectrum locomotives, and all were very nice. The problem was, whoever shipped it always seemd excessively rough because the box always had noticable corner damage, and its contents looked disturbed. Handrails fell of, details rattled off, and the worst of which was a cab that came loose.
Anyone around long enough to know if the REA treated things this poorly. It amazes me how carelessly merchandise is handled by shipper these days; I've seen greater care by gravel truck drivers than most package handlers!

Best way to handle that partial refund eBay guy is stick to this policy: no partial refunds - return it at your cost for a full refund. That usually sends away the ones out to scam you.
I did that a while back on an item and relisted it, and it sold for $95 the first time, and $165 the second time.
Be it USPS, FedEx, or USPS, always pack items to survive a 15 foot fall to a concrete floor, and to be on the bottom of a 10 foot tall stack in the back of a truck.

I think you got taken by the buyer. My last ebay purchase were a Mikado and Pacific in the same box about 15x3x3. They were each packed in bubble wrap and passed the "shake test". The box was marked fragile too. No problems. As a matter of fact, even the bell (50's Pacific with a front mounted bell) was intact. I think most damage occurs from poor packing and thin boxes. For the money, you can't do better than the good old USPS. No, I am not a letter carrier.
