Are Athearn blue box era diesel wheels pressed on the axle halves shaft? I just want some wheels off on. Whats a good way to remove? My idea is to heat the wheels up and use a hammer and a flat punch to knock the axle shaft halves out.

The wheels are "pressed" into shape. They are a powder as opposed to caste metal.

They might crumble upon some impact, since they may have been sintered to the axle.

Sintered: Heat-pressed with axle. Axle is then trimmed, burnished, and polished to fit the gear and side-frames... metal side-framed models, that is.

Today's newest models have machined wheels.

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.

Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Don't heat them up. Best way is with a gear / wheel puller, like one from NWSL, but you can prop them across a slightly open vise and use a hammer & punch.

I haven't removed diesel wheels, but I successfully pushed the axles further through the wheels of an RDC because the axle points had worn and the car sat lower. I'm sure they were pressed on at the factory. They're soft, but with a little care they will be fine.

Or better yet just buy the NWSL replacement wheels that come on an axle ready to swap in place, I don't understand what on earth you're trying to do.
