This is my COTW:

I forget who makes it.. I think Ambriod or LaBelle, but might be someone else. It was a $15 total purchase and comes with Central Valley trucks.

It is a platform passenger car for MOW use I assume:

Nice one Ken! Appears to be in better shape than the one I got from Kellogg's as part of a promotional set back in 1979.

Here is a car I picked up at the Salvation Army store in the middle 80's for 25 cents. There are no markings on the bottom of it and it has no trucks or couplers. Coupler boxes and floor/frame are all molded together. I am trying to figure out how to change the coupler boxes as they have no covers and one of them is broken.

* You should show a photo of the bottom for your car is a life like and the first of these used body mounted trucks and later ones used talgo trucks. my guess is it is a latter version and used talgo trucks.

How the heck can you remember buying a boxcar almost 30 years ago and that you paid $0.25 for it???

That's just scary! LOL!

The price sticker was still on it when I took it out of the attic. In the 80's I worked with a guy that would go to the salvation army store twice a week. He would look for trains for me. He would bring me 3 or 4 cars and track for $2.00. Cheap, I know, but I took all he brought. Other items I bought at stores going out of business. I still have some of the boxes with the discount prices still marked on them -- like a dummy santa fe marked .25 cents or a new AHM remote control switch - .99 cents.

Hi Frank,

I have a couple of these. like them. This one was / is probably the roughest of what I have.

I also have these which are similar:

/tyco/forum/uploaded/Mustangs_n_Trains/20130404131326_12.JPG

I was watching this other one below and I am quite surprised at how high the price is going!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/370786847126?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

The same seller also has a dormitory car listed. I have a really nice built one in a box & packed away. I think I posted it as my COTW a year or so ago now...

It's definately trucks that are screwed into the frame. Coupler boxes remind me of athearns but they don't look the same.

* Your box car had body mounted couplers and screw mounted trucks. you will need a set of screw mount trucks, perferably with couplers attached.
good luck.

The L&N box car appears to be Varney. If you look at the center bottom of the picture, you will see VARNEY embossed upsidedown.

If you are using tyco , life like, bachmann style plastic X2f couples you dont need a coupler box.
frank
edit ; I am attaching a photo of 2 bachmann trucks with couplers. The side walls of your coupler boxes that you have is all you need. look at how bachmann does it. mount then in the pockets in the floor of the box car.

This is an Ambroid "One of 5000" kits made ages ago. It is a MOW car.The prototype for the passenger car was the Main Central. When I built mine ages ago I also used CV trucks which were the best trucks around at the time. The car was made by Northeastern, a supplier of wood shapes. I didn't keep up with HO kits but it is possible that thiis car was reissued by Mortheastern.

Abroid (an acetate glue product) had some really nice kits in there line. Today people would think that they were awfully crude.

Looks like I posted the picture (again) but screwed up the text message. I see that someone posted info about Ambroid MOW work caboose. Abroid ran two series of 12 cars. For those who maybe too young to remember Amboid was a celluoid based blue that worked well on wood. THe kit was made for Abroid by Northeastern models - a company that produced (and maybe still be around) wood shapes.

The kit was based on the Northeastern models Maine Central coach - It was actually a good scale rendition. I had built three of them(coaches) to run behind my little 4-6-0. I later added an MDC express reefer to the train. Somewhere along the line I sold the train to another club member.
