I love "The Complete Book of Model Railroading!" It even has some Mantua (Tyco) (sic) in it. IIRC, it even has a section covering the conversion of a Varney docksider into a cab forward using the part Ken posted recently in another thread. Also a chapter on the then current GE ASTRAC system. Great book!

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

Mike, hello there. Have you gone through your new George Williams book, " Life of a locomotive " yet. I see it is a Chicago and North Western locomotive that is center of this story. What type is it ? How descriptive is the book? Does it get into operation of this locomotive? Are there photos and script on it operation ?

Hello Frank I have only had time to flip through it so far. However I will pick out some highlights...

The cover photo shows "Buddy" at the throttle on the 1616 Class E Pacific at the Milwaukee Depot in 1937. It seems pretty descriptive throughout. When I get a chance I'll scan some pictures to post here.

Not books, but I came across this today at the Internet Archive. Here's a few copies of "Railway Modeller" from the 1960s; a monthly British magazine about Model Railways published by Peco. The price is right (free) and they are interesting to look at.
