First - I am not here to slam these sellers - but the items they are listing are way over priced. If they can get what they have listed -more power to them. I will start with this Golden Eagle - Has been in my watch list for around a year - I have a nice stock pile of these mint in my collection also and if it sells for price they have listed - I might consider dumping a few of mine at a higher price - - Has been this price for around a year - Yes it is in nice condition - but there have been a rash of these listed lately as this posting of new in box or near mint for around 30-50 and some have had caboose with them and some have sold for a lot cheaper. This Illinois Central and caboose set is also over priced as these normally go for around $35 - 45 new in box . The pricing on these is really bad if it is an antique dealer or other stores similar that think these are gold when in fact they are not. Yes -some Tyco does command a hefty price but is usually more hard to find items - the items above are not in short supply or RARE - I am beginning to like the train show circuit more to find Tyco as most items are at better prices than E bay or least this has been my experience in my area at local shows. Just because it is old doesn't always mean it is valuable. AS of lately - Ebay prices on Tyco have gotten higher on commonly found items of which i have noticed most don't get sold at the prices listed- it is possible to still get deals on ebay and it does pay to wait it out sometimes

I've noticed the over-pricing as well, and just attribute it to new sellers who know nothing about trains but are trying to cash in. ALTHOUGH, some of the vintage Tyco has been selling for more than it used to, so maybe some old sellers are raising the prices...but I doubt it. I joined another auction website, Ioffer.com, a few years ago, and noticed that many train sellers were way overpricing their stuff there. Maybe hoping to catch a few newbies at the site unawares. LOL. Nope. No point in dwelling on it, there's still plenty of golden Tyco engines for a reasonable price on Ebay. Just gotta wait and look.

I too, have noticed the higher Tyco prices as I nightly look thru the "newly listed" auctions on Ebay. This is not a new thing, but there's just so much more of it. It's not limited to engines, or nice items either... Even some of the most common pieces are overpriced... I don't go to completed auctions to see what sells. But I see these same auctions listed again week after week...

Last one of those Golden Eagles I sold for $20 at a show broken out of a set no one cared enough to buy whole.

I'm not sure if this is a new trend of sorts, or a symptom of the economy. Remember a few years ago, a typical HO title+description search for "Tyco" would yield about 1,500 to 2,000 results. Nowadays you have *twice* that many.

I attribute this to more people cleaning out attics in response to the economy, claimed estates, etc. Most of these people, as has been previously discussed here time and again, have little or no clue to trains, let alone Tyco.

I will observe that in Tyco auctions I've followed to the end, final prices seem to be depressed of late. Yeah there are always exceptions in rare things that go cheap and common stuff that goes high, but generally the final prices are lower. And yet with increased shipping, the buyer's net cost is still higher, and with fees a seller's take is less. Boo, economy ebaysucks rabble rabble bah.

I beLIEve the economy has been greatly exagerated by the media as they do everything else. It's kind of a weak excuse for people living in poor financial standards. People love to blame something or someone else for everything that happens. I know people that has had their most profitable years in the last few. Ambitious people are the ones who seem to be "not feeling" the economy pinch as they find ways to make things grow.

The old Ebay complaints are another thing I just don't quite grasp.. People love to bash Ebay, yet they buy & sell on there.. IF I don't like Wal Mart, I won't buy there! I'm not going online and whine about 'em...

Is it wrong that Ebay charges a fee for selling your items?? I don't think so... Where else can you get sooo much advertisement for such little of a fee?
Try selling your Tyco in your local news paper & see how that works out...

I beLIEve (or do the capitals make one a liar? I could never tell) that my hyperbolic "economy ebaysucks rabble rabble bah" was a bit too subtle, oops

To be fair, I agree the media tends to overhype things, which is why I don't rely on it for my own judgements. But given the meager value of Tyco and similar items, something must be compelling folks to spend time listing (and relisting), etc. Regardless of any alleged media conspiracy, the reality for many folks is not one of ample fortune, regardless of ambition... but others I know are doing just fine too. It takes all kinds.

As for ebay, I don't think it is intrinsically good or evil. It is what it is, and it's all some love to talk about, while others make their living by it. It is not a perfect system and is rife with faults but no platform is "perfect" and no competitor has the same presence. So you can either play by their rules, or move on. I've done well enough on both sides that I try not to complain save the occasional vent... which I find in bad taste when I catch myself. As I also find repeated gawking / mocking threads to be in poor and unnecessary taste, but that's my own opinion. Be it the economy or politics or ebay or live flea markets, opinions are like.... well the saying is well known.

In the end the only vote that matters is the one you make with your wallet. Ebayers, freeloaders, employer/ees, and politicians are all alike in that regard.

Too much of anything is a bad thing, but occasional public shamings are an important staple of Internet society.
