I'm looking at a HO scale Thunder Jet 500 car by Auto World and the motor is like a Power Torque. The brushes do fit and work well. I'm now wondering if the armature would actually fit the PT and work.

Already looked into it, Justin. The problem is the Power Torque armature has a long shaft to accommodate the tiny gear, the regular slot car armature doesn't have that long a shaft on the top, and you'd have to totally rebuild it to get something close, then you'd need to find the long armature shafts to replace them with. Good luck with that.

Okay I've always wondered, can an armature shaft be shortened? Couldn't I just use my bench grinder and shorten it to the length i want then round out the ends?

Hyde, sure it can. You can grind the shaft, but use a cutoff wheel if it's a long section. I tape over the motor to keep any steel filings from sticking to it or getting into the bearings until I'm done cutting.

Now pushing the shaft through the the armature to make it double-ended is another matter. I've never done it successfully. The armature laminations usually collapse, and/or the commutator rips loose from the magnet wire.

Well that's good. I see those stupid motors that are "double shafted?" In which the armature shaft goes all the way through the motor. Like this. https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ho+double+shaft+motor&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bvm=bv.42661473,d.cGE&biw=1920&bih=934&wrapid=tlif136107504089210&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=c1sgUYoEgsqLAu_6gZAG#um=1&hl=en&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=nwsl+double+shaft+motor&oq=nwsl+double+shaft+motor&gs_l=img.3...8500.10012.0.10200.7.6.1.0.0.0.57.315.6.6.0...0.0...1c.1.4.img.cVZLylCZ_Bk&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bvm=bv.42661473,d.cGE&fp=19cbdb69bbedf887&biw=1920&bih=934&imgrc=YWeH_j1HZna8qM%3A%3BBBeplJ6ac7hBoM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fi.ebayimg.com%252Ft%252FNWSL-29401-9-DC-Motor-Double-Shaft-4x2-4mm-5-pole-8300-PM-12V-%252F00%252Fs%252FNzY4WDEwMjQ%253D%252F%2524T2eC16Z%252C!zcE9s4g3JrtBQ3)5Ls4m!~~60_35.JPG%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.com%252Fitm%252FNWSL-29401-9-DC-Motor-Double-Shaft-4x2-4mm-5-pole-8300-PM-12V-%252F390519711134%3B300%3B225

What do they expect us to use these as replacement band drive motors for athearns?
