Old Gordon Varney sold a lot of box cars. Modelers that are fussy about the road names on the locos and cabeeses are almost never about the road names on their freight cars. Freight car went everywhere. the engines didn't. Varney did a lot of different roadnames on their box cars. In 40' box cars they made standard single door, double door, and a few with different roofs. They made them of wood, plastic, and different metals. There were some outside braced boxcars also. I'll put some in here and see if others do the same. Maybe we could get idea of what was made. No one has seen it all.

A second one for today. Another Pennsylvania railroad car. This one, less were made of. They came out in special store sets. Being where I live I guess they would show up around here a little more.

** Here is one for the railroad fans of the southern states.
* " Louisville and Nashville ".
* I have seen this car by many other manufactures. This is the one I like the best, even though it is the hardest to see and read. Power blue and light yellow lettering. In certain lightings the lettering disappears. For whatever reasons my camera worked this time and gave me a very good likeness of the car.

I'm looking forward to this series. I've often thought this tooling might be the single most prolifically decorated item in HO. And it's still used! A display or running train of all the paint schemes would not only be incredibly colorful and vibrant to look at, but a great history lesson as well. In fact I've often considered doing just this, but... yeesh, I don't need to be "collecting" any more. Maybe once/if I sell off my Tyco collection.

Even as a simple 40' boxcar, and even though it's beyond dated and chunky by today's standards, it's proportioned well and just looks good.

*** My last one for now. till I find somemore.
** The controversial Main Central box. Made by Varney for sale by Penn Line, I think. Many say it was a Saki rip-off. The only defining difference is the use of metal trucks provided by Penn-Line.
You can go to " HOseeker " look at the Penn-Line 1960 or 1961 catalogs, page 1 and there in the Santa Fe small freight set is this car. Penn Lists it as 401MC, varney has a ME box at the same time listed as #880, but it is the all metal box car. It uses the same lettering and same number. the metal car has a few extra lines

MEC 644 plactic car.

This is the all metal MEC 6444 box car. sold at the same time.

The two MEC cars were not made with the same screen or mask. Compare the trunks on the tree, and the fonts for the reporting marks.
