I've been collecting various electronics from a neighboring dumpster at work, they throw out a lot of Dell , Blackberry, and misc. stuff from time to time. I got 5 Server Hard Drives a few months ago, and started taking them apart after asking our IT guy whether they're useable in a PC - they're not, special software, hook-ups, etc. So, I have taken 3 of them apart so far, the motor is a 3-phase stepper, so will require a special circuit to run it. But at 15,000 max rpm, this thing would put a Hustler to shame! It will either have to be a rubber band drive, or maybe a side-gear drive, due to the size of the motor, maybe. AT any rate, looks like a fun long-term project to build something around this potent drive motor.

I don't know, I'd be afraid of watching wheels, axles, and bearings literally fly to pieces with that thing. Full size steam locomotives will shatter if their RPM's get up to high, so it wouldn't surprise me if a little model followed suit.

As for the rubber band idea, I think your bands would cook within about 2 seconds.

Yes, I think there would have to be an RPM limiter, there's no way realistically that I could run any train with the motor turning that fast! Even geared down, it would be way too much. But it has the potential to be a real creeper if geared down quite a bit, those steppers can have some torque as well as speed. Nothing gonna happen right away, but I'll keep the project tame anyway.
