I got my AC Gilbert 0-6-0 #433 motor shimmed up and still have a problem. The motor moves side to side a lot and the screw that holds down the motor has to be real loose or it'll stall out! The motor is from something like the #31031 0-6-0 and totally different. What can I do to solve this?

I'd start with figuring out why the motor stalls when the screw is tightened. Does the screw interfere with the armature? If so, use a mill file to shorten the screw a bit. Or perhaps the screw is torquing the motor body somehow.

Another possibility is that the shim is tilting the motor. Ideally the shim should position the motor so that the worm is meshing with, but not pressing the gear.

Screw is of the right length.

Your shim is probably pushing the worm & axle gear against each other. The shim has to be the right thickness so that the mesh is perfect, with just a little play between the gears.

Works good now! Fixed the motor alignment and tried the smoker for the first time. All I can say IS WOW! Makes my 2 Bachmann 4-8-4's look silly! Just gotta wire it all up! Will 26 AWG be ok?

Do you mean "wow" as in the amount of smoke it makes???

I think 26 gauge wire is too thin. Not really sure, because I don't know what kind of amps that motor pulls.

It had cloth wire that was just as thin! My S gauge counterparts only use 24AWG. I like the amount of smoke that puffs from the funnel!
