A few months ago I picked up a mantua 0-4-0 with a metal boiler. When it arrived, I noticed te boiler was cracked and I put it in the project stack until I could find a repalcement boiler. Today, I picked a boiler and started to rebuild the locomotive. Everytihng went well until I test ran it. It ran well, but the polarity was backwards. I compared the wiring with my other 0-4-0s and everything is identical - pickup wheels on the tender are on the same side, etc.
My question is did early Mantua units have the polarity switched from later years. If it helps identify the age, this unit has two screws to mount the motor and does not have tabs under the cab to mount the boiler. It also has Mantua stamped on the top of the frame between the pilot and the cylanders.
Any information or suggestions on how to change the polarity are appreciate.

Maybe something isn't insulated correctly? Sure the input wires for the track ain;t backwards or something silly?!

the motor top and bottom are almost identical
rotate the motor... only thing I can think of.
double check this by placing a second locomotive on the track. power up the track...

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Thanks for the responses. I am testing the loco on an established layout and it runs in the opposite direction as my other locos. I thought about flipping the motor, but there doesn't appear to be an easy way to do it. The only thought I had was to try and flip the drivers and tender trucks, but I really don't want to go through all of the rod work required.

If the motor magnet was removed and replaced upside down, it will run the other direction.

There is no reversing switch on a DC locomotive. it is not needed. The reverse switch is on the power pack

THANK YOU for answering the question I had of why one of my engines would only run backwards! I took the plunge of resurrecting some old engines of mine over the holidays. After reassembly, one engine would only run BACKWARDS. Now at least I have an idea that that a misplaced magnet might be the culprit.

That's a completely different motor, but he may have screwed the brush end of the motor on upside-down. If not, then the magnets are flipped.
