I went to the famous California Railroading town of Tehachapi! Went to the Loop and watched and filmed trains but I also went to the Trains Etc store there. I remembered last year when I went to their store and saw the Keystone 2 Truck shay kit they had. Didn't have enough for it then but when I went back to the store today it turned out it was still there! They had it for $50 but the nice lady to runs the shop said I could have it for $40! It was NEVER opened or started and the kit is ALL metal! It doesn't have a motor so I need to buy one and whatever else is needed to make it run. I have done a lot of work in the few hours I've had it! Built the cab, assembled 90% of the boiler, assembled the tender tank and part of the frame, yes it will be painted likely tommorow. Please let me know where I can find all it needs to make it run. Thanks!
So I went onto NWSL's cite and they seem to have mostly everything my shay needs but why are there so many different gear boxes??? Could someone tell me what I NEED out of this list, I also can't seem to find what motor it needs.

Nice find Hyde, Your gonna need more tools to assemble that one!
Isn't the Keystone models, non operational models? (I seem to recall that they were!) All tho, I could be mistaken on the company that done that with the static models!

Darth Santa Fe built one of those. Here's a link to his thread on building it. http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/165811.aspx?sort=ASC&pi314=2

Hyde, It's going to be difficult to determine what will work without specific information about your Shay. Those links you posted show gearboxes for the Keystone Shay, so that helps that there is a ready made assembly. But, look closely at those gearboxes. They are the same ratio, 14-1, o.k., but, each is for a different axle size. You need to know the axle size of your loco. I keep a Dial Caliper on my workbench. Comes in very handy for determining sizes. The instructions you have might have dimensions listed or even suggested drivetrain part numbers. The can motor you linked to will probably work. You should check the driveshaft diameter of the motor to see that it is the same as the input shaft of the gearbox you select. (or buy a shaft adapter). Also, you will need some kind of universal coupling from the motor shaft to the gearbox.
This type of repower jobs require a real close look and studying. Don't rush. If things get a little frustrating. Put the project away. You aren't on any time schedule. Keep it fun.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Thank you!! It's already frustrating with priming and painting etc and I am in NO rush what's so ever to build the mechanical aspects. I hope DarthSantaFe can chime in as to what gearbox I need...there's 7-1 and 14-1 I am totally unfamiliar with these types of things, I rebuild and repair Mantua, IHC, and rivarossi locos and everything in between but I don't have experience with a shay. Also so does this mean I can't glue down the boiler, cab or tank until i have the motor and gearbox etc? Also does this mean I can't use the crankshaft, line shafts, and all movign mechanical parts they give me? Thanks again!

Did some work today just trying to get it halfway presentable for my official grand opening of my HO tourist line, The Santa Clarita Valley Railroad or SCVR. Visitors will be allowed to tour my Seybold Locomotive Works shop so we wanted something to show of our shay #5. We primed the main parts then we found bad spots in the metal likely glue stains so I sanded the small areas back to bare metal. Gotta get more primer before the paint can go on. We temporarily put the boiler, cab, and tank on the frame.
on a flatcar
yes i know the kit tells you to put the light on the cab but I felt it'd look better in the back of the tender tank

Looks like ol Hyde is gonna have himself an operational shay by the end of this year!!! http://www.con-cor.com/YardSale/nsw.html So I must ask when I purchase this power kit what else is needed? The gearbox? Worm gear? I still think I'm gonna go with the other motor being I heard it's better.

Hyde, find yourself a nice auto salvage yard and get a cheap CD radio. The motor is similar to Darth Santa Fe's. The motor I speak of is a flat can and used by Mantua for the Classic's 0-6-0.

I still plan on buying the motor I first listed above. What's the issue with the one with the powering kit?

The 7-1 ratio will give more speed than the 14-1.Shays were used mainly on logging railroads with fairly steep grades. Speed was not a goal. Pulling power was. I would go with 14-1. This will make for a slower loco and if you try to run it constantly at regular track speeds, the motor will not last long. You could build a mountain section on your layout for the Shay.

Correct. Do not glue the thing together until you have the drive mechanism installed.
I think the crankshaft and gears and such, are just for realistic appearance. They are probably to delicate and intricate to drive the loco in HO scale.
I just looked at Darth Santa Fe's build. The kit uses the prototype drive assembly. If NWSL has a kit for this particular model, then buy the kit. That way most of the unknowns are taken care of.

That Yard Sale ended in May of 2012. I'm not saying they don't have it. Just they haven't updated their website.

Thanks for all your help! I will go with the 14-1 gearbox! I did see the sale endded last year but not a huge amount of people are looking for Keystone powering kits.

Looks like your Shay's coming along well!
The powering kit at the Con-Cor website should include everything you need. When I bought it (direct from NWSL), it included truck gearboxes, axles, universals, geared lineshafts, the central transfer gearbox, and the motor. Basically, every part needed to make it work.
The motor is a cheap open-frame type, so a good can motor will work better. The 1227S-9 (12x16x27mm) you mentioned on YouTube is too large to fit easily, but it is possible to use if you remove a large amount of metal from the tender area (one person fit a large Kato motor in his, so it can be done). The 1220D-9 (10x12x20) with 479-6 universal would be a much easier fit, and it has plenty of torque to run smoothly. All you have to do is cut the second shaft off (motor tool with a cutting wheel, or a sharp-edged file).
This is considered to be one of the most difficult powering projects around, so take your time to make sure every last part works smoothly as you build it, and it should turn out fine.
Darth Santa Fe, doing weird and challenging projects for the fun of it!

Love the Shay..The light on the tender looks cool...I think they mounted them on the cab to keep the logs from knockin'em off the tender...

Thanks for chiming in Darth! I'll plan out the motor thing as I go along with the project. Caboose1, yeah i love the way it looks now better than it would be on the cab! She'll only be hauling the ocasional caboose trains my shop offers every other month.
