I thought I had seen it all but there is a plastic Pacific/Mikado pilot on "the Bay" going for $28. It is not even mint. What are people smoking?

So many of them were made, and so many got broken. It's a shame they switched to the plastic pilot, because that with the one screw attachment almost guaranteed the weight of the loco would break it.

I'm not sure what Dan at Yardbird Trains charges for them, but he might be cheaper.

Vintage Rivarossi parts have been getting pricey in the past year, too. It's all supply and demand, and this stuff isn't made anymore.

I saw that!! Ridiculous!

My newly aquired UP 4-6-2 was missing its cow catcher so I decided to take the boiler, tender, and pilot beam/cowcatcher from my blown motor SP 4-6-2 and install it on the UP 4-6-2s operational frame! Took 2 hours last night and many new screws and a good break in run but I returned my favorite Pacific to operation!

here's the UP one before disassembly

the finished product!

A good thing is coming out of this. We are learning to be more self dependent and trying new things. Like sratchbuilding your own pilots.

I bought a cast metal pilot from Yardbird trains. I'm pretty sure I paid less than $28.
People think they have a gold mine with NOS parts or at least they want you to think it's a gold mine.
Granted, some NOS parts are desirable and worth extra money.

Oh, wait, you said it wasn't mint, i.e., a used part.

Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.
