I got an email over the weekend for the last auction of the season at my fav auction house, and they listed trains and dolls, so I was going. Even took an hour off work early to get there and check the stuff out. WAY more train stuff than I've seen there before, Lionel, Ives, HO of all kinds, hardware, the guy was definitely an old-school HO modeler. But he had everything from cheapie plastic G scale trains on plastic track, to some cast engines by Bowser and Roundhouse, and the surprise , a small brass 4-4-0 ( I think ) with one of the cast engines in a small box ( with another surprise ) I waited anxiously all night, as the auctioneers ran through EVERYTHING else before they got to the trains, which left less bidders by then. I think maybe 5-6 serious bidders, with 3 of us getting the majority of the stuff, and I was out-bought by a woman buying stuff for her kids!
Anyway, the auctioneer finally got to the end of the first row of tables where the small box of engines was with the brass unit. he started the bid at $5, I got my card up - and no one else even bid on the plats there! I hurriedly snatched that box up when he said Sold! and called my number! YAY! ( The REAL surprise came later, when I got home and unwrapped the paper from inside - there is a 3RD engine in the box!!! ) The two cast engines are missing railings and detail parts, I think I saw them in another box, but wasn't sure they went with them. Anyway, I was happy to get them ALL for $5, I tell ya what! The brass engine appears to be missing the front truck, though. But it's got the motor, driver wheels and rods, so it can probably be finished with little effort, and it looks totally detailed otherwise.
Other items I purchased were :

Lionel Polar Express set, $80 for the engine, tender, and 3 cars(made in China )

a big bin of vintage switch machines, mint shape, $5

a couple plats of lights, walthers I think

much hardware and detail parts

about 10 Shinohara turnouts

a complete set of Ives O gauge steam and freight set, with track and transformer

a Roundhouse Shay 3-truck kit, not sure how complete, the 3 trucks are there. I spotted the engine off by itself, so put it with the kit before the auction got that far. And I bought that plat for $5. Kit # 370, undecorated.

Buildings, some HO cars, tools, and stuff too numerous to mention yet were also bought cheaply. The night wasn't cheap, however, I spent over 200 on trains, but for what I got, I think it WELL worth my investment, and may sell off some of the hardware later. I'll take pictures and post them later this week(end?). Lots going on this week. But I was too excited by getting my first real brass engine to NOT say anything . I just had to blow off some steam before bedtime. The wife will def NOT be happy that I bought more trains, but at least I didn't buy more HO rolling stock, I pretty much left that alone, and let the other buyers have it. The lady buying stuff definitely bought more than me, as some plats of misc. stuff went for $2-3 each. I just didn't want to buy them, not enough good stuff to be worth my hauling it home in my mind. So I think we all got some good stuff there tonight, and well under-valued, too. Glad I waited, I loaded up the HHR with plats, carefully laid the Polar Express on the front floor, and drove home. A great night for sure for train buys. Glad I went and was able to find some good ( nay, GREAT ) deals . All for tonight, will wow ya with pics another night.

Jerry

Adding value....NOW.

This is all just part of the auction material, I still filled up my lil HHR some. :)

Another surprise manifested itself this morning, too. I was looking through the plats in the back of my HHR, and picked up a ziplock bag with something wrapped up inside in a cardboard padded wrapping, looking at it through the end of the roll...what?! ANOTHER Brass steam engine! A Buchanan type 4-4-0 ! Holy pressure pipes, Batman! This one looks to have all the parts with it. I also noticed in a plat with electric push-button switches something else that caught my eye - it LOOKS like it might be the 2-axle leading truck for the other brass 4-4-0 engine! What luck if so! I don't have a picture of this one yet, though. All in good time. Just enjoying the afterglow of successfully having a few steals at the auction.

Jerry, I'll give you $5 for the 4-4-0 right now! Man, that was a steal. The can motor in that or the Shay could easily bring 3 times what you paid.

Interesting to see how they fit a narrow can motor in the 4-4-0 boiler by mounting it backwards, with the gearbox on the rear drivers. That thing is a beauty, and after reading about that second one, I'm officially uber jealous (yeah, I know, I'm actually quoting Ben ).

Those cast engines are Bowser kits, probably former Penn Line. The "Marx" is actually an Ives 0 gauge, I did buy that set ( $ 22 ). It's in good shape, overall. Yes, Justin, I have gotten into Marx lately, too, I got a PA buddy interested in trains, but he started collecting Marx wind-ups and a few electrics, so now I'm looking ( and buying, too ). . At a Toy show in York, PA last month, I bought a big lot of Marx for $50, 3 wind-up engines, 3 electrics...and 2 of the wind-up engines had BOTH Sparker and bell options, apparently a rarity to find one, much less BOTH , in the same engine. My buddy was stupified I found those for that price. . Along with 16 cars and some other parts, I think I did ok on that deal as well. But this auction just really was suburb for the amount and quality of stuff, plus few bidders to worry about. I could have brought home MUCH more, but I promised the wife I'd not buy so much and fill up my car. So I didn't. I DID get some good cream off the top, though!

Some additional buys from the auction -

Deals like this only happen rarely, so I am glad I got the chance to score some awesome stuff for reasonable prices. Sucks for the estate and seller, but oh well. One reason I go to this auction, it's out of the way, and you can get great deals if you wait long enough. I'd say the Lord shone His light on me that night, I definitely felt in a Heavenly mood after I left the auction I got the entire Lionel Polar Express train for about $80, so that was another steal. The only Tycos I got were those two piggybacks in the bin, well, ok, there's probably some Mantua parts and stuff in my buys, too, I think a couple flat cars were in the Switch Machine bin, come to think of it. But not much. Still, happy as a clam.
