The test train had three types of power. The steam engine, a battery powered backup and a backup running off the third rail. I believe the yellow car was one of the back up engines.

the victorians were very clever,firstly the trains used were very special one offs for the underground,all steam the battery locos came much later,they put the steam into the large tanks on the side whilst in the tunnels,and blew it out when they reached certain points as in second photo ken

hi ben there are lots of preserved working steam and diesel railways,my favourite is Sheffield park,once a year they have an open day at the national railway museum,and even rocket is used for passenger rides along with all the favourites,deltic prototype being one ken
