So what does it do? Does it go out, pick up, then move in and release? That's what it looks like it does. If it does, there must be some really interesting gearing or cams or pulleys inside.

I have a couple clam shells of various makes and sizes (packed away in storage). One is on a crane in fact. Another one I have is still in it's package and I believe it was an early Stewart product made of brass. So, they are out there!

Badman, that Revell kit is awesome! I've always been partial to those Ubiquitous Ford Trucks, especially the not so ubiquitous ones with the quad headlamps. Nice find!

I really like that Ford!
Here are mine!

If you are going to use the decals. Make sure they are clean and then spray them with a couple coats of a clear paint to prevent them from cracking apart when you soak them.
