I have quite a number of cabosses yet the trains i watch don't have them, just a blinking light.
I've seen directions on how to make one but
Is there an attachment so that i wouldn't have to convert every car?

If you're running modern ,post-80's stuff, the blinking light is for you. if you're running older stuff, the cabooses were still used. Depends on the era you're modeling. I think the blinking light is called a FRED ( Flashing Rear End Device).

| The ICC ruled that railroads no longer needed cabeese except on special trains after 1984. The maintenance and labor killed them as they did not generate revenue. When modern electronics and sensor equipment could be housed in a practical sized unit, the FRED was born and with it the caboose died. There for awhile, you could buy a caboose from Conrail for $300, it was shipping it and final setup that would kill you.

Ask some railroaders what the F in FRED stands for and they'll tell you something else!

CP does a run near my house with an old SOO line caboose at the back. I believe they are are using it as a buffer car because they are hauling some hazardous materials. It is a very short train, maybe only five cars at the most.
If you zoom in on CPs yard south of St. Paul, MN on Google Maps you can see five SOO line wide vision cabooses lined up waiting to be used.

| shaygetz - Nebraska had a law saying every train must have a caboose That the reason I saw cabooses still as a kid in the 80s Plus that law was probabally struck down in the late or early 90s I think

A fellow HO club member of mine is actually buying a caboose for some miniature railroad ( 1/4 scale ) he's helping build out west somewhere ( Oklahoma? I forget ), anyway, the price was $2,500, and it'll cost him about $10,000 to get it moved to it's new home. So yeah, not cheap for handling costs at all.

I saw a CP train a few years ago with a bay window caboose on the end. It wasn't a short train though.

The norfolk southern railroad near my house uses cabooses on a 23/7 basis, the 23 is because when a redicously long train is used their is none.......... they need to bring the southern 630 over there and haul some trains on that line, but CSX is such a ***** they dont even let one going to a museum be SHIPPED across their lines....

Check out 'Ring Engineering'. They make a self contained truck with FRED on it.

| I was told that if a train was being pushed and the locomotive could not see were it was going there needed to be a radio man on the front of the train, thus old cabooses are still used around some yards and industrial areas. Any truth to this?
