Ken,
The wheel sets that Athearn puts on their dummies are made entirely of plastic. Plastic axle and wheels. They are mounted in a plastic axle mount that replaces the metal axle bearings in the truck frames. A second company makes the metal wheels you asked about that are a drop in replacement of the Athearn. The replacement is mounted in the Athearn axle hanger. I just can not remember that other company's name. I will try to find out who it is for you.

Hi Guys. The company that makes replacement wheel sets is NorthWest Short Lines. They are listed in the Walthers catalog.
There are other companies. But, NorthWest has the best selection for just about all manufactures and types. Carl

Ken,
I did a quick check for wheelsets on Walthers website. I came up with 4 pages of stuff. Northwest Short Line has an extensive listing, but no photos to see. Also listed is Jay Bee Bennett Enterprises which I have used. Have you tried to use Atearns standard wheelsets?

Ken,
As long as you have no electrical shorts, you can use the standard Athearn metal wheels. These will have gears on them. But if you are starting with a dummy, there will be no other gears for the axle gears to mesh with. Thus the wheels will be free spinning. You will need to pick-up some Athearn axle bearings. While this way is more expensive, it allows you to turn the dummy into a powered loco more easily latter.
