The wheel arrangement is of a 4-8-8-4... it's a Baldwin "Babyface"...

The real ones also had traction motors on the lead and trailing trucks, just like some of the steam locomotives equipped with boosters on their trailing trucks or first set of tender axles.

The models will not take any radius sharper than 22"... and, the individual locomotives are 92' long, or about 15" on your layout.

3,000 horsepower... er, the picture tells the story.

I wonder why Union Pacific cancelled their order for these.

"...that only a mother would love..."
Uh, I'm no mother, but I'd love to find any one of these as a stocking stuffer for me!
Anyone share this point with me?

I wonder if there are anymore Demonstrator versions available... Yesterday, Factory Direct Trains were offering the "National de Mexico" units.

but, wow, what a price for a sound equipped locomotive of this size!!!

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.

Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

I can say, I've always liked Baldwin steam and diesel, but this one.....I am not sure of......The B&O tried a Demonstrator and never liked them due to there sheer size, but, the looks is just WOW.....I think they should have done something differently on the face as that "baby face" is well.......not so "baby" by any means!

HOWEVER the comment of a 4-8-8-4, it sure is which a slight GG-1 twist, as the GG-1 is like a 4-6-6-4.....This one is just an extra wheel of that!

I bet it run on 20 inch radius BUT, I bet it looks ridiculous!!

It's a Babyface Big Boy.

Baldwin missed their market. They could have been a big hit overseas.

As a diesel, it would be known as a 2-D+D-2, the D representing 4 traction motors on one truck and the 2 representing the 2 non-motored axles. This would also be used for electrics...GG1s being 2-C+C-2. SD40-2s get even more fun...with one axle as an idler, you have an A-1-A+A-1-A...woo hoo...

Shay,
Sadly the SD40-2 or the SD40 for that matter WAS not a A-1-A+A-1-A...THESE did NOT have a non powered center axle! They were C-C type trucks.......3 powered axles, and 3 powered axles on both trucks.....

The only 3 axle types to have a center idler axle, non powered A-1-A type were the E units for EMD....I'm not sure of the other manufactures.....

Um, Chicago & North Western had SD40-2's... They were geared high to E-Unit ratios...
Their designation of truck assembly was AAA...
These SD40-2's were first built for their Falcon Service trains... #'s 6910-6922...
The "AAA" was painted on the cab just below their cab window and CNW crest...

Today, the trains do not exist... a similar TOFC use in the present day are the Norfolk Southern "Triple Crown" trains.

John,
Yes, this would be true! The "AAA" was a railroad only destination, to complete or signify that they were built to have a higher speed ratio then the normal ones for freight use.....sounds to me as if the C&NW had them geared high for speed......As the E units were but the E units were passenger use only in most cases, and thats why they had A-1-A type trucks, they didn't need the 2 center axles powered as they weren't dragging a long line of freight cars as the SD40 and SD40-2's did.....

So with the C&NW, the "AAA" was stating Powered-Powered-Powered, type trucks as the "A" in A-1-A signifies that the A is a geared, powered axle, and the "1" isn't.
