I know the way piggyback trucks are loaded now are with cranes (if they are used at all instead of containers) but when did piggyback trailer ramps become obsolete? Not to be a rivet counter here, but would a piggyback ramp be realistic on a 70's/80's/90's era layout? I'm modeling the Burlington Northern during that kind of time period so I don't know whether to add a truck ramp or not. Would I have to use a crane?

Chessie, I'm not sure when the ramps became obsolete, HOWEVER, I would say 1970's to the mid to late 1980's would have been the end as I recall seeing the cranes on duty in the 1990's......Which was another reason, the cranes took up less space and could be moved/relocated, whereas the ramps they took up alot of space, and where not easily moved! The 1990's was a time of transition tho so you could see both, the ramps and the cranes in the same intermodal yard!
As for a "date" of this, again, I'm not sure......But, I hope this helps!

I fully remember the Acca Yard in Richmond, VA having long lines of trailer trains waiting to unload in a side area, with the tractors coming in to pull them off the flats. So as far as time period, 70's and 80's should be fine for having ramps. They built an expressway over the tracks, so you had a great view ( for about 15 seconds ) of the whole yard and operations.

| Thanks for the info! I sorely needed this info for a layout project I am doing. I will be using athearn and tyco cars and trailers with a rix products ramp for prototypical end loading instead of the side loading used on Tyco's piggyback ramps.

depends on where the terminal is/was....I know they (WABASH) had a ramp at the end of their branch line here in Columbia a few years ago..it was at the end of their team track

Yes, I live in northern Virginia now, the Acca Yard is just west of downtown Richmond itself. I lived a mile from it in the Fan district area, 3400 block. I was two blocks away from the tracks which were down a steep ravine at the time, before they put in the expressway on either side of it. I could watch trains through the fence at the playground there. My Dad worked as a clerk in the office for C&O in the mid-'60's, sometimes we'd go watch the trains at the yard on Sundays after church. Wish I had photos of some of the equipment passing by, as I was only 6 or 7 at the time. We'd take the '57 Chevy and park it in the work lot by the tracks. Over by the ballpark, there's a VDOT lot, and they use the old Coal dump tracks to hang the winter sandtruck rigs from the tracks. Wish I could get up there and take some pictures! there's lots of railroading history around Richmond, the Triple overpass is in Richmond, I was down there in 2005 taking pictures of it. I haven't been back in awhile, I need to get down to my garage and do some more clean-out. Oh well, maybe in the spring.
