I'm not sure if this has been discussed before. As I was watching an auction for a Canadian Pacific engine I noticed that the spacing in the letters on the sides of the body, bottom picwere different than my example, top pic. If you compare the two examples here you see the differences and the road number is in the rear of the body on the error example. It's as if the shell wasflipped when it put in the tampo printing jig.

The next pictures show the differences on the other sides.

The colors look different but maybe that is the lighting.

I bought this engine at the Cumberland MD train show about 2 years ago but just noticed the error recently.

Is your example the flawed one, or the good one? I wonder how something like that happened Cool observation

Cheez, Thanks. Mine is the error F7. I tried to win the other one but missed out. It's a handsome color scheme.

On the bright side, I'm sure the non-error examples are far more common. You'll get another chance
Geez, after seeing your picture all I can think of is some guy sitting along an assembly line feeding these CP shells in to a stamping machine

Cheez, You are so right. It is more rare to have this one than the correct version that is more common. The correct version I was bidding on had been converted to a dual motored one and I thought it would be fun to have one of those.

That's a pretty neat find. You can clearly see that the spacing in the lettering is so that the carbody seams (rivets) would not normally interfere, so it's as you say: they accidentally flipped the shell when the variant was made. A pretty subtle gaffe, though. Must have been a wild office party the night before ;) I wonder how many others were made?
As for the paint, lighting can play havoc with apparent hues, but I want to say I've seen this maroon / brown shift in person. It's probably due to paint formulation. Kind of how the Atlantic Coast versions can be found from varied intensities of purple down to gray...

A second example of the tampo error on the CP F. If you look closely you can see the number is in the front instead of the rear and the spacing is of on the side of the car body.
