i know we're going back 40 years, but has anyone ever seen one of these? i have never found one. only the artist rendition indroducing the model in 1966.

I think Tony's observation that the 430 was never produced in Green Bay red is pretty much spot-on. The GB 430 seems to have suffered the same fate as the GP-20 Black Diamond featured in the '63 Tyco catalog: it just never happened.
It would be interesting to know if the decision to withdraw the Green Bay 430 was predicated on Life Like's train-set launch at the same time. They'd purchased old Varney and other defunct molds and patterns and offered a bright red ALCO RS-11 in Green Bay Route which was prominently splashed across the pages of their catalog, touted in their ad copy and offered in their "Work Train" and "Big Hook" sets. Despite the Alco's high hood, the two road engines would certainly bear more than a passing resemblance, particularly to youngsters.
