Hey Ya All. I scored two OEM in Da Box Tyco Browneis Super 630's One be Santa Fe and the other ICG, and my god they look great, but On running the ICG it was sluggish and not responsive. It was brand new with original factory greese. As I do love my ICG I took it off and ran the Santa Fe and it too was sluggish but soon sped up to the power packs rated run speed. I left it to run forward for twenty minutes as break in by the Tyco instructions and went out to cook on the barbie when I came in my 3 year old daughter was laughing with glee as my Super 630 was tearing around with smoke pouring out of the cab from the motor. My daughter is very fond of my 0-8-0 Chattanoga Smokin steam engine and assumed that all Tyco engines smoke up on running! Well it smelled of plastic melting and I snatched off the tracks and removed the front engine for better inspection and it looks fine. I can see no damage and it is brand new, it smells thou. I have yet to tear it apart but I was wondering if this model (6 drive wheels) is more prone for this problem. I see alot of these without the front truck on Ebay and RR shows so what gives? Do I have the same concerns on my beloved ICG, You Bet! I had a Tyco GG-1 with the same engine give me smoke but that was from worn down brushes causing heat on the plastic cover. This is a brand new unit and shouldn't be exhibiting this melt down behaviour. Well let me know what ya think, or this one will be a Dummy with lights! Cheers

I would check the tention on the brush springs. They may have lost some of there tention from sitting in the box. I would remove the cover plate that has the brush holders and inspect the armature and inside of the cover for damage also. If all looks well clean and lube it and run it.

Re: your 630s: Ray's suggestion about brush tension seems like pretty sensible trouble-shooting with a power torque power truck. Regarding the matter of their relative reliability, I personally don't think the "new and improved" trucks were among Tyco's better ideas and I have noted not-infrequent problems with NOS examples that have been sitting for many years.
