I heard this on the news but this is the second time this decade that they've filed for bankruptcy. They said it still is possible to get out of it if the workers would reason cooperatively.

Too big of name for someone else not to buy.. Wonder Bread /Hostess has been in finacial trouble for years...

Twinkies are nasty in my opinion, their other products are pretty tasty though.. I do beLIEve that Hostess was overpriced but quality stuff. But with little Debbie having a rack of cakes close buy.. the lesser price product sold..

I think the PANIC is greatly exagerated.. These products will live on soon

they turned down a good offer and now they have nothing

Hostess Brands is unprofitable under its current cost structure, much of which is determined by union wages and pension costs. The offer to the BCTGM included wage, benefit and work rule concessions but also gave Hostess Brands’ 12 unions a 25 percent ownership stake in the company, representation on its Board of Directors and $100 million in reorganized Hostess Brands’ debt.

Watch the price of those billboard HO scale Wonder Bread boxcars go up fast on EBay, just like people are bidding up prices on real Hostess food products, as per recent news stories!

W S J " Hostess Brands Inc. said Tuesday night that mediation talks with its bakers union failed and the company will proceed with plans to close down and sell its assets.

The company, which has already shuttered its plants and sent its workers home, will push ahead with its bid to embark on a shutdown that will leave 18,500 people unemployed and its iconic brands in the hands of new owners or gone, a spokesman said Tuesday evening. Chief Executive

The president of the union didn't even show up for the mediation.

A half a loaf is better than none

[quote]Too big of name for someone else not to buy.. Wonder Bread /Hostess has been in finacial trouble for years...

Wasn't the New York Ontario Western a case of "it's too big for someone else to not buy"? Granted it seems impossible NOT to be able to make money on what Hostess sold...

Twinkies are nasty in my opinion, their other products are pretty tasty though.. I do beLIEve that Hostess was overpriced but quality stuff. But with little Debbie having a rack of cakes close buy.. the lesser price product sold..

As is probably the case; consumers will buy anything that is made cheaper, hence the chinese movement. I was guilty of it too, but now I"m only trying to pay for the great quality of American-made or second-hand.

Have you ever notice on the subject of Unions, that people either beLIEve they are REALLY perfect, or horribly bad!

My opinion of either one of those radical views, is totally incompetent. I've found most people who hate unions has never had a job where a union is present. I don't beLIEve any union is all bad, nor are they all perfect..

As for the Twinkie company who has had money trouble for years.. It appears that they were unable to obtain management & supervision that could do math...

Spending money like they are in congress.... Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

when i was between college and high school I worked construction one summer, no one got a summer construction jobs but I got lucky. $100/week in 1955, fast car, drop dead gorgeous girl friend---- I didn't want to go to college. We were constructing a corporate research lab over 300,000 sq ft.

I had to join the International Hod Carriers Union. While my job mainly involved mixing morter and keeping the brick layers supplied and happy we did any other grunt job required like digging out footings. One time a truck arrived with a load of 2x6s and we were told to unload and carry to another area. I proceeded to put 2 on one shoulder and 2 on the other , wanted to get the job done to go back to my regular job.

I was quickly told by the shop stewart only 2 boards. I argued with him that i wanted to get back to the cool interior of the building. I was told either obey or I'm through

Later went to a union meeting. One of the members stood up and objected to a new by law that the officers wanted to put into constitution. He was told to sit down and didn't. The president had him forcibly removed.

The day of the union is over, they were their own undoing

Did I mention that my dad and brother are union firefighters, my uncle a union police officer, my grandfather a union postal worker, another uncle a union electrical worker and yet another uncle a union auto worker?

Back in the 80s I was part of the high rise building boom in Ocean City, MD. There was one union job out there, they always had someone on strike, it was always delayed for one reason or another, they even made a very bad name for themselves trying to bring unions to the beach companies. To cap it off, once finished, the building was 6" out of plumb and slowly sinking at one end. They were the laughing stock of the beach and lost any credibility with us, especially when we found out that, if we had gone union, our jobs would have gone to other union members with more seniority.

In short, while I may never have driven all those cars, I grew up around enough of them to know the sound of their engines...I grew up appreciating what they did FOR us in the past, while still not caring for what they are doing TO us today. My Grandfather drew on the PO pension for 4 years longer than he worked for them. That all sounds great until one realizes that that kind of math doesn't work in the real world. Somebody somewhere has to pay for it and with $16 billion in red ink this year $11b of that in pensions, who will it be at 42 cents a stamp?

I know it's hard to think in these numbers, but I think you meant 16 trillion in debt.

In the days of Dickensian abuse of labor, union formation was necessary to arbitrate for workers in many industries. Now they're an anachronism, having become little better than a pyramid shakedown racket. Unions arose to push back against unfair business management, but no such opposing force exists to keep union management from being corrupt.

The unions were unwilling to compromise on wages, despite the fact that the economy has gone belly up and the sales for Hostess products are not what they used to be. That's how the free market works, and better to have a job at a lower wage than not to have one at all. An employee can choose to belt tighten, get a part time job, or look for other work, but those those very realistic options that most people are facing these days were said to be unfair.

So the union bosses held their ground, and forced Hostess out of business. And what are they saying now? That those 18,500 displaced employess can find other work!

You're better off without them, John. Twinkies are Satan's loofah sponges anyway... I hate those sickly sweet things. Now brownies on the other hand...

P.S. Sorry John, but I accidentally hit "Alert Moderator" on your post. Apparently it's a one-click emergency deal in case you've fallen and you can't get up.

Boy, you ain't kiddin' on that one..... Satan's loofah sponge....ERRRRR I got "sucked in" on them a few times over the years, hence, why I said what I said about my life time share of them!

As for the fallen and can't get up..... now a MONTH ago, and that woulda been a serious problem! Falling and the whole open heart surgery, being externally glued back together on the outside, open heart, it may have been on the floor! So....I may not have been able to get back up....talk about "Blowing a pipe from te boiler pipe welds they done to me!
